On warm sunny days, the grassy knolls of campus arc dotted with dozing stu dents. Even when the weather refuses to per mit outdoor napping, students will seek refuge elsewhere. The Sterling C. Evans Library Annex fre quently is filled with nappers on fourth-floor couches. As for Evans Library itself, while not the most comfortable place to take a nap, a solitary sleeper can be found any weekday. “It’s been a long week,” said Autumn Holcomb, a sophomore journalism major who prefers to sleep in the Memorial Stu dent Center Flagroom. “I live off campus, so I need to sleep somewhere.” T he Flagroom is a popular place to sleep. Some students like the occasional piano players, and some students, like Holcomb, enjoy the constant stream of people. “I see a lot of my friends in here,” Hol comb said. gets its share of sleepers. The long couches in the exhibit hall become popular spots as exams force students to stay up late study ing. The couches near the various theaters also are comfortable, unless there happens to be a performance going on. On West Campus, the I lorticulture-For- est Science Building provides a soothing en vironment for troubled nappers. The lobby has an array of small fountains, next to padded benches. The fountains can he very soothing for students who have trouble sleeping without some noise. Students seeking a quiet place to curl up can try the West Campus Lihrary. The sec ond and third floors have quiet areas where a pair of comfortable chairs can be pulled to gether for a fairly comfortable resting place. Other students in diese quiet areas are fre quently chatting on their cell phones, hut loud snoring is generally frowned upon. For the outdoors type, the A&M campus has a number of wide lawns on which stu dents can sun and nap at the same time. The grassy strip between the Oceanography and Meteorology building and the Langford Ar chitecture Center is wide enough to avoid enough to be dry on most sunny days. The Quadrangle may get a little noisy for some, and students sleeping on the grass around the MSC risk bodily harm, but otherwise, just about any of the grassy areas on campus are good tor a long nap on a sunny day. But is sleeping on campus good for students? Dr. Andy Smith, associate director of counseling at the Student Counseling Ser vice said, “If you’re gonna nap, then you wanna maximize the possibility that you re ally will nap, rather than just lay there.” Students are recommended to find a place that is comfortable and similar to their nor mal sleeping environment. And while peo ple have been known to feel great after a 10 minute nap, Smith said, “[Length] is real in dividual ... It varies quite a bit and depends on what’s going on in your life.” IxLlAPtE. ^ LlAIR.
