Several buildings in the downtown area were evacuated or closed Tuesday morning after news spread about the incidents in the Northeast. Houston’s William P. Hobby and Bush Intercontinental airports were closed at approx imately 8 a.m., after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) mandated all domestic commercial air travel be halted. Ellington Air Force Base, which serves both military and civilians, also was closed. The base is the home of the Texas Air National Guard and the 147th Fighter Wing. Officials at the Texas Air National Guard declined to go into detail, saying only that Ellington was “on alert.” Ellington, 15 miles south of downtown Houston, also is used by NASA, Continental Airlines Express and United Parcel Service.
