As students, staff and faculty return to
school for the fall semester, they may be
wondering what happened to their labs,
Unix, Pop and ACS email accounts over
the summer. “CIS (Computing and
Information Services) is consolidating
the email services we provide,” said
Cheryl Cato, team leader of Open
Systems Support for CIS.
After Dec. 31, general email services for
students will not be offered from
unix.tamu.edu, acs.tamu.edu, labs.tamu.edu
or pop.tamu.edu.
CIS is helping students transfer these
email accounts to the Neo email system,
the official system for students, staff and
faculty.
“This mass switching over of systems
shouldn't happen again,” Cato said. “It
will stay on from when you’re first admit
ted all the way up until six months after
you leave the University.”
The change is one example of the
upgrades on campus to keep technology
services at a level competitive with other
universities.
“Neo accounts are more than just a
simple email account. It is also a directory
service,” said John Schivvis, communica
tions manager for CIS.
Schivvis said the old email accounts
are being shut down because they current
ly are trying to update the servers.
“In the past, it has been very confus
ing for students coming to the
University when faced with selecting an
email service. We offered the service
from various platforms, and technologi
cal differences made available resources
and access methods different for each
one,” Cato said.
CIS officials say the Neo system pro
vides easier access than other email sys
tems used in the past.
“For one thing, the account activation
process is much simpler than it was in the
past,” Cato said.
“In addition to general email services.
Student Financial Services uses Neo to
deliver Aggie Bucks statements each
month. We also have the capability with
this system to reach a large audii
quickly or a specific targeted grol
Cato said.
For example, a class roster fmll
allows professors to communicate J
students enrolled in their classes tk|
the Neo system.
Cato said all students, staff and fail
have an account available to them.tal
all have been claimed.
“Approximately 60 percent of J
accounts have been activated [forNel

“We’re really the nerve center fora
campus,” Schivvis said. “We answeriM

daily but randomly during the
semester.
“We wanted to have some
immediate benefits for both
on- and off-campus routes,”
Jackson said. “This year, we
are not going to ask faculty
and staff to pay for bus pass
es, nor are we going to ask
students for their ID cards
every day.”
The Howdy route, a
revised off-campus route this
fall, is tentavily scheduled to
feature a park-N-ride stop at
Post Oak Mall. Jackson said
Post Oak Mall has not
responded to his requests for
the stop.
“I have not heard anything
from the mall, unfortunate
ly,” Jackson said. “However,
we are planning on running
the new park-N-ride route
with a couple of modifica-

lions so we do not enter the
mall parking lot with our
buses. I am confident this
will happen, just not before
the first day of school.
Bus services are scheduled
to run regularly from 7 a.m.
to 12 a.m. Monday through
Thursday and 6:30 a.m. to

“This should allow those
who want to ride the buses to
get to campus via one of our
routes, across campus to the
Reveille stop and out to Blinn
before a 7:30 a.m. class,”
Jackson said.
