Legally Blonde
Original Motion
Picture Soundtrack
A&M Records
From beginning to end,
le soundtrack to the hit
lovie Legally Blonde, pumps
out girl power tunes. The
lundtrack has a California
sound to it without being
too “pop.” It can be com-
aired to the 1995 Clueless
lundtrack.
I While jsome of the tracks’
titles sound cheesy and'girl
ish, the ladies of this album
deliver a huge dose of quality
music.
Superchic[k] begins the
“girls rock” theme of the
soundtrack with “One Girl
Evolution,” which provides a
good transition from the girly
first track hy Hoku, “Perfect
Day.”
A perfect amount of funk is
found in “Magic” by the Black
Eyed Peas featuring the sweet
hip-hop vocals of Terry Dex
ter. Samantha Murrma
changes the soundtrack’s
mood by deliving a smooth
ballad “Don’t Need You To
("fell Me I’m Pretty)” and is
followed by “A Thousand
Miles” by newcomer Vanessa
Carlton.
Valeria contributes a salsa
like tune with “Ooh La La”
acconypanied by maracas and
congas.
The all-girl band, Lo-Ball
is a real treat to the album
with “Can’t Get Me Down,”
which sounds like Elle
Woods’ (Reese Witherspoon)
anthq^i. T he racing guitars
and drums leave listeners hop
ing to hear more? from these
talented ladies.
The album ends on a sweet
note with Mya’s remake of the
Jaities Brown hit, “Sex Ma
chine.” The sounds of a jam
ming cowbell and bass guitar
make listeners want to watch
Legally Blonde again.
Girls of all ages will enjoy
driving around with friends
while listening to this sound
track and its message that
“Girls Rule.” (Grade: B)

News in Brief
Committee approves
bill to overturn Bush's
ban on federal aid
WASHINGTON (AP) —Abill
to overturn the administration's
policy banning federal aid for
groups that advocate abortion
rights was approved by a Sen
ate committee Wednesday.
By a 12-7 vote, the Senate
Foreign Relations Committee
passed the bill. Sens. Gordon
Smith of Oregon and Lincoln
Chafee of Rhode Island were
the lone Republicans support
ing the bill.
Democrats have been
seething over the policy since
President Bush imposed it dur
ing his first week in office.
The policy bars U.S. aid to
international groups that use
their own money to support
abortion through performing
the surgery, counseling about
it as a family planning option
or lobbying foreign govern
ments on abortion policy.
The House has already vot
ed to preserve Bush's policy, so
Senate Democrats face an up
hill battle to reverse the rule.
