Shelly Burnett wins Miss Greek 20
By Mariano Castillo
The Battalion
Kandace Krueger was not the
only Aggie in the spotlight of a
pageant Friday night. Shelly Burnett,
member of Kappa Kappa Gamma
and a junior journalism major, won
Miss Greek 2001 at Delta Sigma
Phi’s Miss Greek Banquet at Pebble
Creek Country Club.
The Miss Greek Banquet is de
signed to celebrate the accompl ish-
ments of the top Greek women on
campus, and the contestants for the
title were judged in various areas,
with emphasis on demonstrated lead
ership and service to A&M and to
their sororities.
Burnett has held leadership posi
tions in various A&M organizations,
including the Freshman Leadership
Development Retreat, Howdy Week
and HOSTS.
“I tried my hardest while wor king
toward [Miss Greek],” she said. “It
was so much fun spending time with
my sisters and having their support.”
To earn points for the competi tion,
each competing sorority participated
in service projects for the communi
ty. Each contestant aimed to have 10
percent of her sorority help with pro
jects in the Bryan-College Station
area, including the Brazos County
Food Bank, Girl Scouts-Bluebonnet
Council and retirement homes.
Jason Finehout, Delta Sigma Phi
president and a sophomore business
major, said the Miss Greek contes
tants brought out more than 250 —
women to complete over 1,0(K) hours
of community service.
“The community service was my
favorite part,” he said. “It was rl-O
warding to see the sororities gi^g
support the Greek system may not
know enough about it to understand.
“Sororities are extremely impor
tant,” Burnett said. “We have so
many things to offer. Greek women
give to the campus in so many ways.”
Finehout presented Burnett with a
$1000 scholarship as Miss Greek.

One factor that did not play a rqle,
in determining a winner was physi
cal appearance.
“We’re rewarding them for what
they’ve given to A&M,” Finehojut
said. “Beauty can only go so far, and
it doesn’t have an applicable use [for
Miss Greek].”
The judges based their decisions
on an application, the number of
votes each contestant received on the
Miss Greek Website, percentage of
sorority participation in a service
project, T-shirt sales and a question
posed at the banquet.
Finehout said the banquet also
served as an opportunity to bring
sororities, from different councils
together.
Burnett said sororities are impor
