Individual riders from the Texas
A&M women’s equestrian team look
to advance to zone competition this
weekend as the Aggies host the Zone
7 regional championships Saturday
at N.W. Dick Freeman Arena.
Head coach Tana Rawson said
she is confident the Aggies will do
well and is enthusiastic about hosting
the event.
“It is an easy show to host be
cause we know exactly how many
girls are riding,” Rawson said.
“There is usually not as many girls
as the other shows. The girls are pre
pared. They have been working hard
the last couple of weeks.”
The English team has already
qualified for nationals after edging
out Oklahoma State University by
two points in the last show of the sea
son. English coach Meghan Nolan
said all the pressure is gone because
of the win.
“The nerves are way gone, and
that is very, very nice,” she said. “We
have a lot more girls that we can take
to nationals as individuals, which is
our goal. Right now there are eight
classes, so eight riders can go at least.
We hope to take a lot more than that.”
The top three riders from each
class will compete at the Zone 7
championships at Colorado State Uni
versity in Fort Collins on March 24.
The Aggies advanced 22 riders to
the regional show.
The western classes consist of
reining, alumni and alumni reining at
the open, advanced, intermediate,
and beginner levels.
In English style, the riders will
participate in open fences and Hat, in
termediate fences and flat, novice
fences and flat, and walk-trot.
Juniors Quincy Cahill and Ger
maine Dougherty will lead the
charge in the western and English
shows respectively.’ Cahill and
Dougherty have already advanced
to nationals in a special class re
served for the high-point riders from
each region.
Cahill qualified for regionals in
reining and open horsemanship. She
dominated the reining class this year

The defending national champion Texas A&M women's
archery team will host the South regional bracket of the In
door National Tournament this weekend.
The National Archery Association will compile the results
from eight other sites and declare team and individual win
ners. Last year, the Aggies edged out Columbia University
to claim the national title.
Freshman Mary Zorn will look to win the compound
national title. Zorn finished third in the World Archery
Festival in Las Vegas after facing collegiate and profes
sional athletes. Zorn said she is confident about her per
formance this weekend.
“I’m really not too worried about playing the waiting
game,” Zorn said. “The competition here will be pretty de
cent, and if I shoot the way l know l can, then I'll know if I
have a chance or not.”
Zorn will try to break the world record this weekend. The
two-round score of 590 is the current world record in the com
pound class. Zorn has been shooting record-caliber scores in
practice, and she thinks the record will fall soon.
“I’m all over it,” Zorn said. “It is mine, or at least that is
what I’m telling myself. My goals this week: Since her cc>
