Police arrest man
after grandmother
falls from balcony
NEW YORK (AP) — A man was ar
rested Monday after allegedly push
ing his 78-year-old grandmother to
her death from the 21st-floor balcony
of an apartment building, police said.
Authorities said the 24-year-old
man, whose name was not immedi
ately released, subsequently tried to
jump from the balcony but was caught
in a police net that was stretched from
the floors above and below and
hauled back into the building.
Police Commissioner Bernard
Kerik said that the man’s grand
mother had already fallen to her
death by the time police arrived.
Firefighers battle
blazes in Florida
POLK CITY, Fla. (AP) — Firefight
ers continued Monday to battle a
wildfire that has. burned 10,500
acres and closed a 10-mile stretch
of interstate highway in a dried out
swampy region of central Florida.
The wind-driven fire in the Green
Swamp had grown from 2,000 acres
Saturday night and had jumped In
terstate 4, a heavily traveled route
connecting Tampa, Orlando and Day
tona Beach.
The section of highway remained
closed Monday because of heavy
smoke and fallen trees. It was un
clear when it would reopen.
The blaze has forced the evacua
tion of about 30 homes. No injuries
were reported and no houses were
damaged, officials said.
