Rocker
loses case,
gets raise
NEW YORK (AP) — John
Rocker lost his salary arbitration
case with the Atlanta Braves on
Wednesday but still will be get
ting a huge raise from tlie
$290,000 he made last year.
Rocker will get $1.9 million
this season rather than $2.98 mil
lion he sought, arbitrators Jack
Clarke, Jerome Ross and Elliot
Shriftman ruled.
The left-hander went 1-2 with
a 2.89 ERA and 24 saves last year
for Atlanta.
Tuesday’s hearing lasted
more than four hours. More than
half the Braves’ case centered on
the aftermath of the Sports Illus
trated article, according to a
lawyer familiar with the hearing
who spoke on the condition he
not be identified.
This was the first year Rocker
was eligible for arbitration, and
the Braves said they would use the
distraction the pitcher caused as
ammunition during the hearing.

FORT WORTH (AP) — The Dal
las Cowboys’ decision on quarterback
Troy Aikman’s future could be ex
tended an extra week without costing
the team $7 million. Aikman said
Wednesday he has made it clear he
wants to keep playing.
The deadline by which the Cow
boys have to make a decision or pay
the money has been pushed back a
week to March 15. That extension was
prompted by the NFL’s recent decision
to delay the start of its league year from
Feb. 15 to March 2.
Originally, Aikman was due the $7
million if he was still on the roster on
March 8. The team does not have to
pay Aikman that bonus if they cut him
or he decides to retire before the new
deadline.
Despite suffering four concussions
in his last 20 starts and missing all or
part of eight games last season, Aik
man said he wants to continue to play.
“I have made it clear that I want to
keep playing,” he told reporters
Wednesday while playing in the Bob
Hope Classic golf tournament. “We’re
still kind of working through some is
sues and I’d like to play. Unfortunately,
as I could and score and help the team
out in the second half.”
Bean was one of five Aggies in
double figures, led by King who had
22 points.
Freshman forward Nick Anderson
chipped in 12 before fouling out, and
freshman forward Jesse King and
sophomore guard Jamaal Gilchrist
had 10 points each.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has
said that he expects to make a decision
before the March 15 date. Jones said
earlier it was not in the team’s best in
terest to delay a decision because the
makeup of the roster and the Cow
boys’ philosophy in 2001 hinge on
whether Aikman returns.
Dallas Cowboys officials did not
return a phone call Wednesday seek
ing comment. Jones has refused to
elaborate publicly about the future of
Aikman, the first player he ever draft
ed after buying the team in 1989.
Aikman, 34, missed the final two
games last season. He suffered his sec
ond concussion of the season, and the
10th of his 12-year NFL career, when
he was tackled by Washington line
backer Lavar Arrington on Dec. 10.
Leigh Steinberg, the player’s agent,
told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on
Wednesday that he didn’t want to
speculate whether Aikman might play
for another team if the Cowboys de
cide they don’t want him back.
sively on Merriweather, holding him
to 5-of-18 shooting, including 3-of-
13 from behind the arc. He finished
with only 14 points.
Chatman scored 18 of his 31
points in the first half and finished
10-of-17 from the floor.
A&M senior forward Carlton
Brown did not suit up for the game,
serving a one-game suspension for
what Watkins called a violation of a
team rule.
