by his office. One database contains
student access information, and the
other contains a list of staff members
who have access to residence halls.
Murray said all student access
cards are deactivated during the break,
but the staff database stays active.
Murray did not have an exact
count of staff members with access
to the residence halls, but he said
there were hundreds, including main
tenance staff, UPD, Coca-Cola ven
dors, and hall and custodial staff.
“We have lots of people who need
access,” he said.
Although the halls are closed,
Murray said, the doors are not me
chanically locked with a key. Instead,
security depends on the electronic
locks on the doors, which means
anyone with an active card has 24-
hour access to the halls.
Murray said the system could pro
duce a report showing everyone who
accessed a particular residence hall,
which would be turned over to UPD
investigators for analysis. However,
Foster said, the report often proves to
be little help in identifying a suspect.
“Even if you knew someone’s been
in the building, you don’t know if
someone came in with them,” she said.
Murray said various Physical
Plant and Residence Life staff mem
bers have access to master keys, but
added that Physical Plant does not
make a practice of entering student
rooms unless a situation requires it.
“We have a policy that we in
Physical Plant follow — that nobody
is to enter any room unless there is an
emergency,” he said. “Physical Plant
maintains a key shop for people who
need to use [master keys], but there
shouldn’t have been any need to use
them during the break.”
Dan Mizer, Residence Life assis
tant director for dormitories adminis
tration, said since Spence bathrooms
are public, there is no need to issue
master keys to custodial staff. How
ever, pest control workers must enter
rooms to work, and Spence was one
of the halls that received pest control
treatment during the break.
Mizer said Physical Plant staff
must turn in their keys at the end of
their shifts.
Trisha Swery, Spence graduate
hall director, said she personally ver
ified that all doors were locked be
fore she closed the hall for the break.
‘The doors were double- and triple-
checked before we left,” she said.
Wiatt said the cases are currently
under investigation, but no suspects
have been identified. He said the
odds of recovering the items are un
likely because, without a witness, it
is difficult to nail down suspects.
Foster said students need to be
aware of the University’s policy on
winter break, which is that storing pos
sessions in rooms is at their own risk.
She said students should not leave
valuables in their rooms because the
break is a much less monitored.
Wiatt agreed.
“You should never leave anything
of value, and if you do, conceal it,”
he said.

for dinner on Saturdays since there
wasn’t a great demand on Saturday
night. Zawieja said offering dinner on
Sundays would better fit students’
needs.
More than l ,000 meals served at
Sbisa last Sunday, and Zawieja said
the new hours were a success. How
ever, the rush of students caught Food
Services by surprise.
Students piled into Sbisa to be met
by long lines, a small staff and a
crowded eating area.
“Typically our historical weekend
traffic was so low that we could feed
them in the market,” Zawieja said.

“Body piercing saved my life.”
Not a pierced ear, nose, navel or tongue ... but pierced hands and feet. And not as a fashion
statement ... but as a sacrifice for you and me. Nearly 2000 years ago,
Jesus Christ was brutally nailed to a cross-crucified. Why did he suffer?
Why did he die such a cruel death? So we wouldn’t have to. Because he loves us.
“But he was pierced for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
And by his wounds we are healed.”
Isaiah 53:5 (New International Version)
And now here’s the real good news: he’s alive today! God is reaching out to men through His son, Jesus Christ.
To find out more about God’s relevance in your life. We encourage you to read this free article by Josh McDowell:
