Don’t be the ignorant black person.” “The majority of problems that 1 hear aren't academic, but in how people handle their relationships,” said Regan Miller, a senior biomed ical science major. Barry Hammond, a sophomore finance major, told the audience how leaders need to define and rep resent their actions and beliefs. “Because there are so few of us, you must excel in everything you do,” Hammond said. “You can’t change the situation, but you can change the outcome. You must rep resent your culture well every sin gle day. You must have strong com munication skills or your message is lost.” April Young, a juniorjournalism major, stressed the need to build co hesion among the African-Ameri can students on campus. “I fear that five years from now, blacks will be extinct on our cam pus,” Young said. “Don’t give up on A&M. Bad-mouthing the school to friends and family won’t help increase our black enrollment rates.” Young encouraged freshmen to get involved on campus and help minority recruitment efforts by sharing their experiences with high school students.
