Lewis all ot five minutes to provide Texas A&M players with the rivalry's first bulletin board quote of the week. Asked Monday about the Aggies’ 270-pound running back Jamar Toombs, Lewis offered little respect. “All you got to do,” Lewis said, “is hit him in the mouth and he’ll fold.” That is big talk about a running back who last year smashed through the Texas defense for 126 yards and two touchdowns in A&M’s 20-16 victory. 66 All you got to do is hit him in the mouth and he'll fold” Where Do You Fit In? — D.D. Lewis Texas linebacker on A&M running back Ja'Mar Toombs M a /o But big talk is what rivalries are all about. And Lewis’ questionable quote is just an indication that the state’s biggest rivalry is back on solid ground. In a rivalry that dates back to 1894, this year marks only the eighth time both schools will be ranked when the game is played. Texas (8-2, 6-1 Big 12) moved up two spots after its bye week to No. 12 while the Aggies (7-3, 5-2) fell one spot to No. 22. For the last two years, be it history in the making or a tragedy that cast a dark shadow over the game, the rivalry was marked by niceties between the two schools. In 1998, Texas' Ricky Williams was on the verge of breaking the NCAA I-A career rushing record. Aggie players and coaches heaped praise on Williams and even said they hoped he would set the record, which Last year, the game was played under thee strain of A&M’s collapsed Bonfire tragedy, which people and injured 27. The Hurricanes (9-1), who beat Florida State earlier this season, also won convincingly, defeating un ranked Syracuse, 26-0. But the eight computer rankings used in the stand ings to determine who plays in a title game were more impressed with the Seminoles’ win. “This is the way it is. I either make it or I don’t,” said Florida State coach Bobby Bowden. For tjiree weeks, Oklahoma, Mi ami and Florida State have been ranked 1-2-3 in the Associated Press media poll and USA Tb- day/ESPN coaches’ poll. If Miami fails to get into the BCS title game, the Hurricanes can still become national champions in the AP media poll, in which sports writers and broadcasters vote inde pendently of the BCS. The coaches' poll would automatically crown the winner of the Orange Bowl. Though he would be disappoint ed if the Hurricanes did not play in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 3, Miami coach Butch Davis said: “We beat the No. 1 and No. 2 teams (at the time) and two or three others who are bowl eligible. If we end up going 11-1, we 11 have beaten someone very good in a BCS game.
