Clearing House on tri

PORTAGE, Wis. (AP) — Pub
lishers Clearing House went on trial
over its sweepstakes promotions for
the first time Wednesday, with state
lawyers accusing it of preying on the
elderly with misleading advertising.
State lawyer Cynthia Hirsch said
the sweepstakes’ mailings dupe peo
ple into buying magazines and other
merchandise in hopes of improving
their chances of winning the jack
pots, which can run into the millions.
“The essential misleading de
ception Publishers Clearing House
communicates is the more you buy,
the closer you get to the big prize,”
she said.
In the civil case, the state is seek
ing an unspecified amount of money
to reimburse residents it says were
defrauded. It also wants the sweep-
stakes to change its marketing prac
tices and pay a penalty.
In August, Publishers Clearing
House agreed to pay $18 million to
24 states and the District of Colum
bia to settle allegations it uses de
ceptive promotions. Wisconsin,
which sued Publishers Clearing
House last year, was not part of that
settlement.
Publishers Clearing House attor
ney Jon Axelrod said the state’s
own witnesses would say they
knew they had little chance of win
ning and did not have to buy any
thing to enter the drawing
He said people did not till
were misled until Attomeyi|
Jim Doyle sued. He called

objected to the allegation.

Missing boy fow
frozen in woods
DELLWOOD, Mo. (AP| — A po-
lice officer was shot and killed in
what authorities say was a cold
blooded ambush that triggered a
four-hour standoff before the sus
pect surrendered.
Thomas Meek, 43, was
charged on Wednesday with first-
degree murder.
The standoff began after Sgt.
Richard Eric Weinhold, 44, and
three officers were called to a home
in St. Louis County on Tuesday. A
tenant said he was afraid to ap
proach the house because the sus
pect was inside and had earlier
pointed a shotgun at him.
Weinhold was hit by a shotgun
blast shortly after the officers en
tered. His bulletproof vest could
not save him, and he later died at
a hospital.
