NFL owners voted Wednesday to award the 2004 game to Houston. The game will be played at Reliant Stadium, the home of the NFL’s newest franchise, the Houston Texans. The team is scheduled to be gin playing in the 2002 season. “It is really a win for a championship city,” said Mayor Lee Brown. Although the game is anticipated to bring in about $350 million in revenues, Texans owner Bob McNair said a price tag ca not be placed on the exposure the city will get. “In terms of image building, you can't put a dollar figure on that,” McNair said. “The inter national exposure for the city will really extend our reach and the vision of people will be in delibly impacted. We're going to create an im pression worldwide. There are a lot of smiles around here.” Houston’s recent publicity has been mostly about its polluted skies, as last year it edged out a In terms of image building you can't put a dollar figure on that” — Bob McNair Houston Texans owner Los Angeles as the nation’s smog capital. This year the cities are running neck and neck for the unwanted title. Houston is also home to NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center and a wealth of energy and oil companies. McNair said the retractable roof stadium was a draw to the owners. “That in itself will be an experience and a first for the Super Bowl,” he said. “I think they're real proud of the stadium. When all the owners get to see it and play in it. they are go ing to come away saying, ‘Wow.’ We plan to show the league, the member clubs, the media and the fans that Houston is a perfect site for the Super Bowl.” Ex ITA Regional Continued from Page IB singles showing at the ITA All- American. A&M’s highest seeded singles are No.' 11 Nedorostova, No. 12 Roland, No. 13 Hedberg and No. 17 Leah Killen. Kleinecke said any of the A&M women can come into the tourna ment and surprise everyone, but he said the team is mainly trying to re gain its confidence in singles com petition. “Single-wise, I will have to wait until after this tournament (to de termine where we stand), because we still have a bad taste in our mouths from the ITA All-Ameri can,” Kleinecke said. The top-seeded singles player in the Southwest Regional is Jahnovi Parekh from Baylor, followed by Chin Bee Khoo from Arkansas and Anna Monhartova of Tulane. Bay lor has three of the Top 10 single seeds in the tournament. Kleinecke said he expects the team to have a solid showing and possibly come away with some upsets. He said his team’s goal is to get at least one doubles team into the National Invitational In door tournament. Ashley Backus, Roberta Spencer and Eva Marcial will also compete as singles in the Southwest Regional. Spencer and Backus will also competing as a doubles team as will Marcial and Killen. Terburgh will also compete individually. Marcial, one of only two seniors on the team, said she thought the Southwest Regional would be a good test for the young A&JVI team because it will play matches against quality opponents each day. “It’s a good gauge for the spring,” Marcial said. “It will be a tool for us to see how we’re playing.” The tournament will be held Fri day through Monday at the Varsity Tennis Center and the Omar Smith Tennis Center. It is the last compe tition that A&M will see until the spring. Achilefu Continued from Page IB ACHILEFU and she’s a true power hit ter, and that's going to get any crowd or team pumped up.
