DALLAS (AP)—A teen-ager was
critically injured in a lightning strike
at the Texas Motor Speedway as
strong thunderstorms moved through
the state, forcing dozens of plane
flights to be rerouted or canceled.
The lightning victim, identified
by a relative as Preston Pruett of De
catur, was struck Sunday at the mo
tor speedway’s parking lot shortly af
ter the IRL season championship, the
Excite 500, ended.
Pruett, a 17-year-
old junior at Decatur
High School, was in
critical condition at
Parkland Memorial
Hospital in Dallas
early Monday, ac

Several incoming Southwest Airlines
flights were diverted to other air
ports, an airline spokeswoman said.
“We’ll accommodate them on the
next possible flight,” Kristin Nelson,
a Southwest spokeswoman, said.
“It’s starting to look better.”
Normal operations were expected
as the weather cleared. More rain
was forecast for Monday.

region’s most significant rainfall in
the last four months.
American officials also diverted
51 incoming flights from DEW to
other airports, airline spokesman
Tim Kincaid told the Dallas Morn
ing News.
“We’re trying to start up normal
(Monday morning) and get back pn
schedule,” he said ’late Sunday.
“Those folks on those flights that we
can’t get on other flights will spend
the night here, and we’re trying to get
hotel accommodations for them.”

For United Airlines, one arrival
and one departure were canceled.
Meanwhile, four outbound flights
were delayed up to three hours and
three incoming flights were diverted

A United official said the airline
has about 23 incoming and outgoing
flights form the airport daily.
“It was a tough ride,” said Arthur
Causey of New York, whose United
flight from Chicago was delayed by
about four hours Sunday night.
“One thing about discussing race
is that, if you do it in a large envi
ronment, sometimes people don’t
want to speak up,” Scott said. "Race
relations need to be given constant
attention. Mass culture in America
tells us to find fulfillment in the
good we can obtain as individuals
rather than as a community. But
faith blends us together as Am
