Amazon apologizes for pricing
SEATTLE (AP) — In the span of
two weeks, Amazon.com has been
forced to apologize, issue refunds
and appease angry customers after
charging some people higher prices
than others for the same items.
Amazon.com has been forced to
deny allegations that the different
prices were based on customer data
it collected on shoppers as they visit
ed its site. That data includes every
thing from addresses to what some
one bought previously at
Amazon.com.
“We’ve never tested and we nev
er will test prices based on customer
demographics,” founder Jeff Bezos
said Wednesday.

known as “dynamic pricing.” Forex-
ample, department stores in well-to-do
areas often charge more for the same
goods than stores in poorer sections.

But software tools allow online
retailers to compile sophisticated
dossiers on visitors to their sites. Us
ing billing information and purchas
ing history, e-tailers can learn cus
tomer preferences and target
individual shoppers with customized
screen offerings.
Amazon.com ran into trouble a
few weeks ago when customers who
bought DVD movies began compar
ing notes on online discussion boards.
The online book-and-CD store
said it had been randomly offering
the same DVDs at different prices to
different customers as part of a mar
ket test.

Curry said the tests were useful in de
termining how much Amazon.com
could charge and still maintain a
good sales volume.
Woman wants ‘fistful’ from Eastwood
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — A feder
al jury Thursday began considering
whether a disabled woman deserves a
“fistful of dollars” from Clint East-
wood because his hotel was not fully
accessible to her wheelchair.
John Burris, the lawyer for Diane
zum Brunnen. did not ask for a specif
ic dollar amount. But he urged jurors
not to excuse Eastwood from comply
ing with the Americans with Disabilities Act and a similar
California law because he’s a celebrity.
“Mr. Eastwood is a very Special man, no question about
it,” Burris said, gesturing across the courtroom toward the

actor-director who’s been in court every day since the tri
al began Sept. 19. “I believe he thinks as a matter of prin
ciple he is entitled to special consideration from you.”
Burris said Eastwood spent millions renovating his
Mission Ranch near Carmel but neglected to spend a “fist
ful of dollars” to improve disabled access, a reference to
the first of the “spaghetti Westerns” Eastwood starred in.
Eastwood attorney Chuck Keller used the same refer
ence, accusing zum Brunnen and her husband of visiting
Mission Ranch merely to find grounds for a lawsuit.
“Make no bones about it,” Keller said. “That’s why
the plaintiff is here, and that’s why you’re being asked to
decide this case: Because she, and those who represent
her, want a fistful of dollars.”
