good time for us because we do have
a lot of nagging injuries.”
The Aggies’ only returning
starter in the defensive backfield
from last year, senior free safety
Michael Jameson, should be back in
the lineup for the Big 12 opener
against Texas Tech after missing the
last two games with a severely
sprained ankle.
Sophomore offensive tackle
Michael Mahan, who will not partic
ipate in contact drills this week,
should also return to the lineup
against Tech after suffering a con
cussion in Saturday’s UTEP match.
A&M’s other offensive tackle.
Tango McCauley, will not see con
tact in practice this week, either. His
status for the Raiders’ game will de
pend on how his knee responds to
treatment. Sophomore offensive
lineman Billy Yates could also be
back to bolster the Aggie O-Line
against Tech.
The returners will undoubtedly
help the Aggies in their game against
Tech, a historically heated series that
A&M leads 32-25-1. Last year, the
Red Raiders knocked off the Aggies
in Lubbock, stalling a downward
slide in the polls and in the Aggies’
record that ended with a loss to Penn
State at the Alamo Bowl.
Early Kickoff
A&M will be back on television
next week. The Big 12 has an
nounced its television schedule for
the week of Sept. 30, and the game
between A&M and Texas Tech has
been moved up to 11:30 a.m from its
scheduled 1 p.m. Fox Sports Net will
provide the television coverage.
Packed House
A&M athletic officials have sold
every seat at Kyle Field for the Ag
gies’ first conference contest against
the Red Raiders. Tech officials have
already sold their 4,300 tickets, but
demand from West Texas is still
high. To accommodate more fans,
temporary bleachers will be erected
in the south end zone of Kyle Field.
Less than 600 temporary-bleacher
tickets will be available at $35.

Olympics

Miller was considered a likely
medalist in both the 100 and the 200.
•SWIMMING: Jenny Thomp
son has one last chance. Lenny
Krayzelburg has one more chance.
The two American swimmers
qualified Wednesday in preliminar
ies for their Sydney gold medal
quests. For Thompson, it will be the
final opportunity to win an individual
gold after six relay medals. For
Krayzelburg, it offers an opportunity
to pick up a second gold medal.
Thompson, America’s most deco
rated female gold medalist, swims in
the 100-meter freestyle against world
record-holder Inge de Bruijn of the
Netherlands. U.S. swimmer Dara Tor
res also qualified, finishing right be
hind de Bruijn.
Krayzelburg set himself up as the
favorite by setting an Olympic record
in preliminaries of the 200-meter
backstroke. His 17-year-old team
mate, Aaron Peirsol, finished second.
No swimmer has equaled the per
formance of Ian Thorpe, the ac
claimed Australian sensation. The 17-
year-old Thorpe captured his third
gold medal of the Sydney Games by
leading his team to victory Tuesday
over the U.S. team.
Thorpe has also captured a silver
at his hometown Olympics, never
finishing behind any American. His
lone second-place finish came when
Dutch swimmer Pieter van den
Hoogenband took the gold in the
200 freestyle.
Typically, Thorpe helped the Aus
tralians set a world record in the 800-
meter freestyle relay by opening a
two-body-length lead on the first leg.
The Americans took the silver, their
second in the relays, while the Nether
lands earned the bronze.
The Americans captured a gold of
their own, their sixth in swimming,
when Tom Malchow set an Olympic
mark in the 200 butterfly. Teammate
Cristina Teuscher picked up a bronze
in the 200 individual medley, giving
the United States 14 medals in four

through the motions,” said senior middle
blocker Heather Marshall. “Our practices have
become much more intense since then and
everyone in really fighting on the court.”
Since the loss, the Aggies have dropped in
the AVCA/Top 25 Poll from No. 19 to No. 23.
“The loss showed us that we are going to
have to work a lot harder than we thought,” said
junior outside hitter Michelle Cole. “It’s so
easy to come out and think, ‘We beat this team
last year, so we can beat them this year.’ But
this is the Big 12 and you really have to go out
and earn every win that you get.”
Playing in the Big 12 conference means that
A&M will have to play its top game in each and
every match.
“Even though we are a great team and have
so much talent, anyone can beat us at any time,”
Weynand said. “This is conference and any
thing can happen.”
A&M coach Laurie Corbelli said being at
home is a big advantage for every team in the
Big 12.
“Teams are really different at home,” Cor
belli said. “It’s a much easier task. The team
that gets better on the road and gets those
prized wins on the road are the teams that are
going to have the best shot at the champi
onship.”
Leading the way for the-Aggies is Marshall,
with a .374 hitting percentage and an average
of 1.41 blocks per game. Cole and Marshall are
days at the Olympic pool.
• MEN’S SOCCER: The
U.S. men’s soccer team made it to
the Olympic quarterfinals for the
first time ever. On the Melbourne
Cricket Grounds, the American soc
cer players notched a historic 3-1
victory Tuesday over Kuwait. The
Americans, needing a win to ad
vance, outplayed their opponents to
earn one.
A first-half goal by Danny Califf
preceded second-half tallies by Chris
Albright and Landon Donovan as the
Americans won for just the fifth time
in 25 Olympic contests dating back to
1924. Two of those wins were against
Kuwait.
In three preliminary games, the
Americans wound up 1-0-2, good
enough to move forward.
•WOMEN’S GYMNAS
TICS: The Magnificent Seven of
Atlanta were replaced by a fourth-
place finish in Sydney for the U.S.
women’s gymnasts — the first time
since 1988 that the American failed to
medal in Olympic team competition.
leading the Aggie offense with 3.59 kills per
game, and junior outside hitter Erin Gibson is
contributing defensively with a team-high 3.70
digs per game.
All-American candidate and junior setter
Jenna Moscovic is leading the team in assists
with 12.38 per game.
A&M will be in home action this weekend
when it takes on Colorado Saturday at 7 p.m.
and the University of Texas-Pan American on
Sunday at 3 p.m. Both matches will be played
at G. Rollie White Coliseum.
