focused on educational measures to
cope with the problem of sexually
transmitted infections.
Griffith said education is not
enough to prevent the dangers asso
ciated with sexual activity.
“We know from nationwide sta
tistics that you have to provide peo
ple with a convenient means of pro
tecting themselves,” she said. “A lot
of college students do all types of
things spontaneously, and 1 think
sometimes there is a spontaneity to
a sexual encounter, which means
that often it is not planned and not
prepared for.”
Griffith and the H1V/A1DS
Committee have not approached
A&M President Dr. Ray M. Bowen
about the proposal, but thinks a stu
dent-driven initiative would be far
more effective because the issueisl
controversial.
Elaine Liao, a senior accounting!
major, said she thinks condom ma|
chines should be installed around!
campus. |i
“We are just telling peopletobej
sate.” I aao said. "Besides, whoai
1 to tell people not to have sex?
we might as well have something!
in place in case they do needpn>|
tection.” j
One residence hall directorsaifl
that, before condom machines arein-l
stalled, housing authorities wo
have to hear from students than
machines are needed. |
Griffith echoed a similar sen!
timent.
“If students are interested inea
dom machines, I would like theinti
contact me so that, between studa
and the HIV/AIDS Committeet
might be able to partner to see ifwej
can get this done," she said.
