Techno fashion escapes from nightclubs to run wild on the streets

The Battalion
The look born late at night to the pulse of techno
music is crossing over to everyday fashion. The big,
bright, bold look once reserved for ravers dancing all
night long can be seen on people cruising the mall.
Julie Quintero, a sophomore journalism major, said she has
seen more people on the street wearing the same clothing
items she sees at raves.
“A lot of the styles have really crossed over into
everyday fashion,” Quintero said. “All different kinds
of people are wearing brighter colors and T-shirts with
’80s logos.
“1 think that beads have translated to the
most diverse kinds of people. Everyone from
little girls to Ricky Martin is wearing bead-
ed bracelets.”
The look is similar for men and
» women. Pants are big, shirts are bright,
toys are accessories, shoes are com
fortable, and hair is anything but conservative.
PANTS
“Phat pants,” wide-leg pants with circumferences
from 30 to 69 inches, are one of the most recognizable
trademarks of the rave scene.
Justin Henson, a junior biomedical science major,
said the style of phat pants worn at raves depends on
whether the person is into the music or the look.
“The new kids that are into it because it’s trendy
wear phat pants with lots of pockets, snaps and
straps,” Henson said. “The ravers who are there
for the music and know how to dance, wear phat
pants — the phatter the better. The style, is sim
pler — dark denim and khaki chinos are the most
popular styles.”
SHIRTS
The characters that you watched on Saturday- morning car
toons are back — on the T-shirts of ravers.
Retro images such as cereal box characters like Cap’n Crunch
and cartoons like Mighty Mouse are popular T-shirt icons.
“T-shirts with old-school logos such as Atari or Thundercats
look good under the lights at raves because of the bright
colors in their designs,” Henson said.
Erin Toomey, a senior biomedical engineering major,
said she prefers to wear tank tops at raves because they
are more comfortable.
“Tank tops are easier to dance in, and you still look
good,” Toomey said.
ACCESSORIES
Don’t worry, you can bring your toys with you to
the rave. Anything you can play with is an appropri
ate accessory. Cell phones, pacifiers, glow sticks and
other reflective things are all part of the ensemble.
Ravers pile on as many beaded bracelets and neck
laces as possible.
“Making beaded necklaces and bracelets and trading
them is really big right now,” Toomey said. “Trading all
your bracelets away and wearing new ones that other peo
ple have given you is something people brag about.”
Belts are one item for which there is a dramatic differ
ence in style for men and women. Men wear simple nylon
belts, while women opt for oversized belts made of pleather
or suede.
SHOES
Basic sneakers that are easy to dance in and might have come
out of Run DMC’s closet are the shoes of choice for ravers.
“Old-school Addidas is seen the most,” Toomey said. “The
style that has a rubber shell tip of a bright color, such as blue.”
HAIR
Hair«is another avenue of expression for ravers.
Guys’ hair is spiked and dyed blue, pink, green or yellow.
“Girls have a lot of different things they can do with their
hair,” Toomey said. “1 like to wear mine in a ponytail or
pigtails and try different colors.
“Hair accessories are really big, everything from glit
ter to disco balls and tiaras.”
Visors are essential for keeping the sweat out of your
eyes during a heated dance while still looking sharp.
Cartoon characters and athletic logos are frequent visor
toppers.
