Cowboys offense in bind
IRVING, Texas (AP) — The
$42 million receiver is out for the
season. The $85 million quarter
back is woozy from his third con
cussion in 10 games.
The only thing worse than the
offensive line that allowed five
sacks in the season opener is the
defensive line that gave up a fran
chise-worst 306 yards in rushing.
Now they are going on the road,
where they have lost eight straight.
Just one game into the season,
the Dallas Cowboys and new coach
Dave Campo are facing many more
problems than an 0-1 start.
Dallas plays Arizona on Sunday
without receiver Joey Galloway or
quarterback Troy Aikman. The
Cowboys are stuck with most of the
other players who looked complete
ly lost in a41 -14 loss to Philadelphia.
“We’re not what we were four,
five years ago,” said running back
Emmitt Smith. “You don’t have
Pro Bowlers at every locker today.”
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones tried
patching over rough spots by shak
ing up the coaching staff for this sea
son, returning Dallas to an offense
better suited for Aikman Lind trading
chunks of the future to make Gal
loway a featured attraction.
Four quarters into the season,
the plan has sprung a major leak.
Galloway’s spot is going to
James McKnight, a backup for five
years in Seattle who missed last
season with a knee injury.
The new No. 1 receiver is real
ly Raghib Ismail, who has always
done better as a No. 2.
Look at his numbers last sea
son. In three games with Michael
Irvin as the primary target, Ismail
had two 100-yard games. He had
just one in the 12 games after
Irvin’s injury forced him to be Aik-
man’s top option.
The new quarterback is Randall
Cunningham, an All-Pro two years
ago who was benched by the
Vikings after six games last season.
In hindsight, they blundered
by having Galloway in the game
through the final minutes. He was
hurt on the Cowboys’ third-to-
last snap.
If the sky-falling-quickly sce
nario seems familiar, it is because
a similar version played out last
season in San Francisco.
Years of poor drafting, risky
salary cap management and devo
tion to veterans past their prime
caught up to the 49ers in 1999.

Texas A&M freshman tennis
player Ires Davis advanced to
the semifinals in the juniors por
tion of the U.S. Open Thursday.
Davis is the United States’
No. 1 ranked junior doubles play
er and the No. 2 ranked singles
player.
Along with partner Robby
Gineprei of Marietta, Ga., Davis
advanced through the quarterfi
nals by defeating the No. 2 seed
Todor Enev of Bulgaria and
Joachim Johansson of Sweden,
3-6, 6-2 and 6-4.
“What an honor it is for Tres
to be representing his country
and Texas A&M in the semifinals
of the U.S. Open doubles,” said
A&M coach Tim Cass. "The
experience he is gaining this
week is going to be a plus for our
team, and the exposure that
Texas A&M is receiving is excep
tional."
Earlier in the week, Davis lost
to Brian Baker of the United
States 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Davis, a freshman from
Austin, is playing in his fourth
grand slam event of the year
after seeing action in the juniors
portions of the Australian Open,
French Open and Wimbledon.

Ja’Mar Toombs
The Notre Dame defense was
ready for Ja’Mar Toombs and
limited him to just 1.3 yards per
carry. But Toombs is bigger than
ever this year, in size, and will be
A&M’s weapon against defen
sive lines, opening the ground
game even more for Whitaker
and Weber.
