Major Applewhite and Chris Simms have staged a preseason duel to start for the sixth-ranked Longhorns, who open the season at home Saturday against Louisiana-Lafayette (0-1). Brown’s message to Texas fans waiting for the final word: Do not hold your breath. The decision is likely to wait until the last minute and there is little chance of any public an nouncement before the game. “We’ll make the decision sometime before game time and we probably won’t tell anybody except the two quarterbacks,” Brown said Monday. "We have told our team it doesn't matter, we have two starters. That’s the way we're going to approach it. 1 don't think the team will know until they run out on the field.” Applewhite passed for 3,357 yards and 21 touchdowns in leading Texas to a 9-5 season in 1999. But a tom knee ligament in a 27- 6 Cotton Bowl loss to Arkansas opened the door for Simms, the left- handed son of former New York Gi ants quarterback Phil. Simms threw for 223 yards and one TD in mostly mop-up duty last season. His only start was a 20-16 loss at Texas A&M. Simms has taken most of the snaps with the first team during pre season workouts but both players say either could get the ball on Saturday. Brown continues to leave it open that "It's a slap at both of us really. We're a lot more alike than we are different." both could get a lot of playing time. “I’m sure (the coaches) have a lit tle idea in their mind,” as to who will start, Simms said. “Nothing would surprise me. Sure I want to play, but if they decide otherwise, that’s the way it goes.” Brown said there is a lot of eval uating still going on. “We’ve got to look at who’s go ing to be the best starter on Saturday, who’s going to be the best off the bench and have the best chemistry,” Brown said. “Right now, the kids are handling it really well; the team is handling it really well.” The Longhorns say they do not care when a decision is made, whether it is today or right before kickoff. “We can win with Chris Simms and we can win with Major Ap plewhite,” said tailback Hodges Mitchell, who ran for 1,346 yards last season. Applewhite said he and Simms are more similar than most people realize. He cringes when given credit for being a smart player, while Simms is Applewhite praised for his physical tools, namely his 6-foot-5 frame and strong arm. Both he and Simms are physical ly and mentally talented enough to win, Applewhite said. “To hear people say, T wish I could combine Major’s brains and Chris’s athleticism’ is just ridicu lous,” Applewhite said. “It's a slap at both of us really. Continued from Page IB A newcomer on the women’s team, who looks to contribute early, is Katherine King from San Antonio’s MacArthur High School. Hartman said the women’s prospects for qualifying for nationals look good. * “It’s a long season and a lot of things can happen,” Hartman said. “However, we are in a position right now where, if we do the right things, train hard and stay injury-free, we will be at the national championship meet.” The only cross country meet on the A&M campus this year is the Texas A&M Invitational. It will be held Oct. 14 at the University Golf Course. The meet will serve as the final stepping stone for both the men's and women’s teams before the Big 12 championship, which will be hosted by the University of Colorado two weeks later. The men and women can anticipate a challenging run in Boul der, the home of the three-time de fending champion Buffaloes, where they will be competing at an altitude of approximately 5,500 feet. Aggie basketball coach Melvin Watkins announced the departure of two of his highly touted recruits from last year’s bumper crop. Freshman guard Trayvean Scott of Baton Rouge, La., with drew from A&M, and freshman forward Jesse King of Detroit has failed to reach academic entrance requirements, Watkins said Friday. Scott fell victim to a common problem for many freshmen at A&M — he missed home. “Trayvean was here for one day and decided he was home sick," Watkins said. “It wasn’t anything against Texas A&M; he just decided he wanted to be with his family.” Watkins said losing Scott should leave a tangible void for the Aggies to fill.. “He was a young man that we were counting on to compete for playing time," Watkins said. “We’ll move forward and someone else will have to pick up the slack." The 6-foot-6 King should be back on the team after December, if he is able to meet entrance requirements by that time. “We look for Jesse King to be on the team for the second semester,” Watkins said. Continued from Page IB In the Sooners’ first game against Texas-El Paso, Huepel showed to be the same game-breaking quarter back who finally had some help in the back field with freshman run ning back Renaldo Works. OU rolled away with a 55-14 win. The Aggies showed to be stronger in the backfield with a triple threat at tack between junior fullback Ja’Mar Toombs, sophomore running back Joe Weber and freshman running back Richard Whitaker. Despite los ing to Notre Dame, the Aggies an swered a lot of questions on offense and can focus their efforts during the two off weeks on increasing their scoring. Both A&M and OU had numer ous questions as they entered the sea son. Now they have been answered, and the teams can get to work on win ning the Big 12 South. illl aggieinfotech2000 - Notepad JgEj aggie info tech 2 0 0 0 A FREE campus-wide telecommunications and information technologies conference for ALL undergraduate and graduate Aggies all MAJORS invited Thursday, September 14th, 9am~4pm Student Memorial Center http://aggieinfotech.tamu.edu HASSLE FREE from VARSITY FORD www.yarsityfordlincolnmercury.com COLLEGE GRAD PROGRAM HIGH REBATES LOW INTEREST RATES MUSTANGS, RANGERS & EXPLORER SPECIALS!
