Sports in Brief
Cross country team opens
season at Rice Relays today
The Texas A&M cross
country team is traveling to
Rice University today to com
pete against many of the
sport’s top competitors at
the Rice Relays.
The relays will consist of
two runners who will alter
nate in four separate legs.
Each leg is two miles for the
men and one and one-half
for the women.
The meet is a stepping-
stone for what coach Dave
Hartman describes as a
“long, challenging journey.”
Both men and women see
this practice meet as a
warm-up meet to tell them
individually, and as a team,
where they stand.
Hartman is enthusiastic
about this season’s senior
and junior runners and said
he is excited about seeing
them “step into leadership
roles and carry the team.”
The team members antici
pate this meet as a chance to
begin their trek to nationals.
Both the men’s and women’s
teams plan to challenge one
another and equal each oth
ers’ success this season.

that’s not going to happen this year.”.
A stalling offense might not be the
Aggies’ biggest problem. Their de
fense is critically thin after a rash of
injuries from training camp, and
coach R.C. Slocum said he had to do
some emergency shuffling for Satur
day's game.
“[The injuries] are as bad as I've
ever seen,” Slocum said. “We had to
move Lonnie Madison back to de
fense after having him at tight end
since last spring because I’m just try
ing to fill our positions [on the de
fensive linej.”
Regardless of the teams’ strug
gles. both teams will look to start the
season off with a win.
Coaches
Continued from Page 7
Texas A&M is probably even bigger,
not just because of how we finished
last year, but we have so many per
sonal ties when it comes to this
game,” Davie said.
Davie spent nine years under
Slocum at A&M as first a lineback
ers coach and then defensive coor
dinator, where the two became
friends and Slocum tried to make a
Texan out of the Yankee. But the
North would draw Davie from
A&M when he was offered a simi
lar position at Notre Dame. A few
years later he was in a position
equal to his former boss. Through it
all, Slocum was one of his biggest
supporters.
Saturday, the two will have to put
friendship aside and find a way to
win a football game.
“There will be so much going on
during the game, that won’t really
cross my mind,” Slocum said about
his friend being across the field.
“We’ll see each other and visit a lit
tle bit before the ballgame, but, dur
ing the course of the game, neither
one of us will be paying much atten
tion to that. We’ll-both be focused on
what’s going on in the game and I
doubt we’ll really think about it ex
cept maybe during a critical situation
and I’m trying to figure out what he
might do.”
For both teams and both coaches,
this is a major crossroads if either
wants to put their team back among
college football’s best.
“For me, it is a big game,” Davie
said. “I feel very fortunate. The last
16 years of my family’s life, I’ve
been at Texas A&M and I’ve been at
Notre Dame. I think they are two of
the greatest places in the country to
coach college football. Without be
ing too dramatic, I think they are two
of the best places in the country to
raise a family. 1 feel very fortunate to
be in that situation.
“Before the game is kicked off,
I’m going to enjoy the moment, and
I promise I'm only going to enjoy it
for a moment. Then we’ll kick that
thing off and we’re going to get after
each other.”
That is why this game promises
to be the best opening game in the
country.
