Three shot at hospital
Man kills two, then turns gun on himself
KINGWOOD (AP) — A man fatal
ly shot his wife and another man in a
hospital courtyard before committing
suicide Saturday afternoon, police said.
The slayings happened outside
Kingwood Medical Center's emer
gency room about 1 p.m., said Hous
ton Police Department spokesperson
Sylvia Trevino. No one else was in
jured in the shooting.
Kingwood is a suburb north of
Houston.
"It was really scary," said Marge
Schwartz, who was visiting her sister
inside the hospital when the shots rang
out. "I never dreamt that it was gun
shots, I just heard this popping noise."
The man shot his wife and another
man numerous times with a high-cal
iber revolver before turning the gun
on himself, Trevino said. The identities
of the three were not released.
Hospital officials said the shooting
happened inside a wooden gazebo
standing near the emergency room en
trance. None of the deceased were em
ployees or patients.

hospital visitor
Chuck Schuetz, a hospital execu
tive, said, immediately after the inci
dent, several staff members worked
to save the three victims.
"We did our best to resuscitate
them, but 90 minutes later, they were
dead," Schuetz said.
Hours later, police had cordoned
off the area around the gazebo, which
stood in a grassy courtyard near the
entrance to the emergency room. A
crying hospital worker could be seen
standing near another entry way, along
with a colleague who appeared to be
consoling the woman.
The motive for the shooting was
not immediately known, but Trevino
said it may have been caused by
marital discord.
"It appears it's is going to be a love
triangle situation," Trevino said of the
incident. "The shooter believed he
found his wife with another man."
Paul Barnes, who arrived at the
scene after the shooting, but saw the
police cars and a crowd of onlookers,
said he was surprised violence had
erupted at Kingwood's hospital,
normally a quiet place.

Head-on collision claims four lives
FORT WORTH (AP) — Four peo
ple died late Saturday after a driver
going the wrong way down a high
way smashed into several other ve
hicles, police said.
The wreck happened about 8:30
p.m. along State Highway 121 just
east of Fort Worth.
The driver of one pickup crashed
head-on into another pickup, then hit
a van filled with nearly a dozen peo
ple, city police said.
The driver heading the wrong
way, who was apparently fleeing an
other wreck moments before on 121,
was killed instantly when his pickup
burst into flames after hitting the van.
The accident also sent the van skid
ding down the highway upside down
before it came to a stop.
So far, the dead include the driver
of the first pickup truck, a small
child, a teen-ager, and an adult. Nine
others are listed in critical condition
in local hospitals.
No names have been released,
police said.
