KOROLYOV, Russia (AP) —
Russian scientists linked the in
ternational space station Wednes
day with its Russian-made con
trol module, a key component
that will allow the first crew to
live and work on the long-de
layed station.
A large screen at Russia's Mis
sion Control showed the compo
nents coming together, then
briefly lost contact with the sta
tion. Once it was clear the linkup
had been achieved, the scientists
applauded, shook hands and
gave each other thumbs-up signs.
With the linkup to the Zvezda
control module, the station is
ready for its first crew, due to ar
rive in October. But the space lab
oratory, a massive 16-nation pro
ject headed by the United States,
will not be complete for another
five years, after more than 40
space flights.
The docking occurred at 4:45
a.m. Moscow time (8:45 p.m.
EDT). Space controllers will not
know whether the mechanical
locking system worked correctly
until about an hour and a half af
ter the linkup, officials said. Dur
ing that period, the station was to
pass out of radio contact witli
Mission Control in Korolyov, just
outside Moscow.
Shortly after docking, Zvez-
da's solar arrays will begin track
ing the sun, and within a few
days, its computers will take full
control of maintaining the sta
tion's orbit.
The 24-ton cylindrical Zvezda
— which means “star" in Russ
ian — is crucial for the station's
immediate future, providing liv
ing quarters and steering con
trols and distributing electricity.

Iranian president
seeks re-election
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) —Iran’s
President Mohammad Khatami
said on Wednesday he will seek
re-election next year in a chal
lenge to hard-liners trying to sti
fle his reforms.
Since his election in May
1997, Rhatami has introduced
a policy of openness to the out
side world and granted greater
social and political freedoms.
“I will participate in the presi
dential elections and will put my
views to vote and will respect
the people’s choice,” the official
Islamic Republic News Agency
quoted Khatami as saying in a
meeting with officials of the Min

Khatami was elected with
more than 70 percent of the
