THE BATTALION "Page 4 Monday, July: Olympics Continued from Page 3 Danny McCray, two-time national relay champion, ad vanced to the finals in the 400-meter dash. His time of 45.00 was sixth best and makes him eligible to be an alternate on the 1,600-meter relay team. Ty Sevin, current volunteer assistant coach with the A&M track and field team, finished fifth in the men's javelin final with a throw of 239-10. Head coach Ted Nelson said Sevin trained hard to make the Olympics and was disappointed he did not qualify. Ricky Barker, A&M record holder in the decathlon, was not able to crack the top 10. Former All-American Anjanette Kirkland, one of the fa vorites in tire 100-meter hurdles, won her qualifying heat but pulled a hamstring going over the first hurdle in the semi-fi nal round and was unable to finish. Adrien Sawyer, former conference champion and All- American, advanced through the first round to the long jump finals but finished seventh behind Jackie-Joyner Kersey. Former student Detrich Clariett finished 20th in the triple jump with a mark of 41-03. Nelson said the large number of Aggies at tire Olympic Trials is good for the program. "Having 17 athletes, former and present, competing at tire Olympic trials is a great tribute to Texas A&M track and field," Nelson said. Kessel Continued from Page 3 Such high praise from his manager and good results — a 3-1 record since his arrival — might have had Kessel thinking of going to the big leagues. In spite of the problems the last- place Astros' pitching staff experienced this season, he said that the majors are in the very back of his mind. "I try not to think about (the Astros)," Kessel said. "I'm just trying to make myself better every fime out." He said the hitters at the AA level make pitchers improve because "you've got to make a quality pitch" to get hitters out., Still, Kessel does recognize that his style — a left-handed control pitcher that gets many hitters to hit the ball on the ground — has its benefits. "Hopefully, they'll see I throw a lot of ground balls,"li said. "There are definite advantages to getting hitters ground balls." Kessel is enjoying his time with the Express, whidi Eastern division champion of the first half of the TexasLe season. "It's nice to win," he said. Win is exactly what Kessel did in his last start onf night against the Shreveport Captains, the AA affiliate San Fransisco Giants. Kessel pitched seven strong inni' 100-degree heat and went 1-2 at the plate in a 5-4 win game was tight pntil the bottom of the seventh inniip former Baylor Bear Charley Carter put the gameoutof: by doubling with the bases loaded. /londay, July 24,20 While To place a classified ad: Phone 845-0569 or Fax 845-2678 Office: Room 015 (basement) Reed McDonald Bldg.
