There was only one problem with AAA Legal Alternatives' site, Attorney General John Cornyn said Tuesday. It's illegal. Cornyn on Tuesday sued Tom Hill and his company in Travis County Dis trict Court, claiming Hill falsely adver tised through his Website from Sep tember 1997 to January 1999 that he was able to obtain quick divorces for United States residents in the Caribbean nation. Fees for a "Dominican celebrity di vorce" ranged from $650 to $1,595 de pending on how quickly the customer wanted the divorce and whether both parties agreed to the procedure. Hill even offered a "layaway divorce plan," which allowed customers to pay in installments and receive the service once the final installment was made. Hill said he could get divorcesinai few as three days from the day her^ ceived the paperwork and payment.!! also said no one had to appear in court "However, according to thelawsoi the Dominican Republic, non-residert foreigners are not eligible for unilatet- al divorces in the Dominican Republic And if a consumer wants a muhn consent divorce, one of the divorce spouses has to make a personal ap pearance in the Dominican Court These are facts Hill does not disclose, the attorney general's petition said. Many customers never receivedi vorce papers or other verificationoftl* divorce and no evidence exists toshoi Hill even attempted to end the mar riages, according to court documents "It does not matter if fraudute businesses use the phone, mailortk Internet for their scams. Thosewk deceive Texas consumers will bepui ished," Cornvn said. War waged over proposed memorial WESTMINSTER, Calif.
