Dr. Dre joins battle
against Napster
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rapper Dr.
Dre has joined Metallica in,a legal
fight against Napster Inc. and its
popular music-sharing software.
“I don’t like people stealing my
music,” Dre said Tuesday in a state
ment announcing a federal copy
right lawsuit against the company.
The Napster software allows In
ternet users to search and down
load music directly from each oth
ers’ computer hard drives.
Metallica sued Napster last
month, accusing the company of
encouraging the software’s users to
trade copyrighted material without
permission. Dre’s lawsuit makes
the same claims.
“Napster has built a business
based on large-scale piracy,” the
Dre lawsuit said.
A Napster receptionist said the
company would not comment on
the suit.
Spielberg donates
to D-Day memorial
BEDFORD, Va.
(AP) — A contri
bution from Sav
ing Private Ryan
director Steven
Spielberg will be
used to build a
theater at the Na
tional D-Day
Memorial.
Spielberg asked that the amount
of his donation not be disclosed,
Richard Burrow, the memorial foun
dation’s executive director, said in an
nouncing the contribution Tuesday.
The theater, part of a $4 million
education center at the memorial,
will be named for the director’s fa
ther, Arnold Spielberg, who flew Army
Air Corps missions as a radio oper
ator in Burma during World War II.
Saving Private Ryan is about the
D-Day invasion. The movie won five
Academy Awards, including one for
Spielberg as best director.
The memorial is set to be dedi
cated June 6, 2001, the 57th an

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Online pet supply

garity, insults both the humans and other dogs around
him and often conducts physical attacks of a sexual na
ture on female dogs,” the complaint says.
The lawsuit goes on to say that in “an attempt to harm
the Sock Puppet’s audience appeal and ... to increase Tri
umph’s popularity through a public ‘controversy’ or
‘scandal,’ ” Smigel has claimed to media outlets that “the
Sock Puppet is a ‘rip-off’ of Triumph.”
The lawsuit names onjy Smigel and not the show or
NBC. It seeks unspecified damages and legal costs.
Marc Liepist a spokesman for “Late Night,” said nei
ther the show nor Smigel would comment on the law
suit. But, he noted that the cigar-smojking Triumph made
his debut long before the arrival of the sock puppet.
Liepis said the cigar-smoking Triumph first appeared
on Late Night on Feb. 13, 1997. The Pets.com puppet
made its debut in August 1999.
“I’m guessinlg Pets.com is suing to basically stop
Robert (Smigel) (rom complaining that they ripped it off
from us,” Liepis paid.
