performed for a
sellout crowd.
The Three Tenors returned Sat
urday night for four encores be
fore a crowd of 11,000 at Man
dalay Bay Resort on the Las
Vegas Strip.
They sang selections from "Le
Cid” andfTosca” and performed
“Maria," “Tonight" and “Moon Riv
er” with the 84-piece Glendale
Symphony Orchestra, conducted
by Marco Armiliato.
The show will be the only West
Coast concert this year for the Three
Tenors. Tickets cost $95 to $900.
Pavarotti christened the center
last April, shortly after the hotel-
casino opened.
Wynette will be the first posthu
mous recipient of the Pioneer
Award from the Academy of Coun
try Music.
Trisha Yearwood, The Judds. Pat
ty Loveless, Martina McBride and
Dolly Parton will participate in the trib
ute during the CBS broadcast May 3.
The Pioneer Award was created
in 1968 to recognize outstanding
and unprecedented achievement
in country music. The recipient is
chosen by the 3,000-member
academy's board of directors.
Wynette had 20 No. 1 hits, in
cluding “Stand By Your Man," and
two Grammys in a career that
spanned more than 30 years.
She died in 1998 at 55 after
years of various health problems.
