April 25, 2()()() THE BATTALION Page I I Baseball returns home to face Bearkats CHAD ADAMS/The Battalion The Texas A&M baseball team returns home to face the Sam Houston State University Bearkats Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Olsen Field. The Aggies are coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. The sweep stretches A&M’s losing streak to 12 games, the longest in school history. Tuesday night is also “50-cent sausage dog night” at Olsen Field. Wilkens resigns as Hawks coach Sports in Brief Men’s golf team in first place at Big 12 tourney The Texas A&M men’s golf team is in first place following Monday’s opening round of the Big 12 Championships at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchison, Kan. The 33rd- ranked Aggies carded an open ing-round 4-over- par 284 to hold a one-shot lead over No. 36 University of Colorado (285). No. 17 University of Texas is third at 286, followed by No. 3 Oklahoma State University (287) and No. 25 University of Kansas (287), Texas Tech University (291), University (292), No. 37 University of Oklahoma (296), Kansas State University (297), University of Missouri (297), Iowa State University (304) and the University of Nebraska (304). Individually, A&M is led by sophomore Sean Gilliland and freshman Dwayne Morley, as both fired an opening-round, even-par 70. Gilliland (36-34=70) and Morley (34-36=70) are tied for second place with Colorado’s Matt Call and Kansas’ Casey Harbour, four shots behind first- round leader Charles Howell of Oklahoma State. Sophomore Josh McCoy and freshman Matt Lindholm posted a first-round 72, while senior Ty Cox notched a 76. The third and final round will begin Tuesday morning. ATLANTA (AP) — Lenny Wilkens resigned Monday from the Atlanta Hawks alter the worst season of a 27- year career in which he won more games than any coach in NBA history. Wilkens’ resignation was an nounced at Philips Arena by team president Stan Kasten and general manager Pete Babcock. The coach did not attend the news conference. “Atlanta will always hold a special place in my heart,” Wilkens said in a statement. “I have so many wonderful memories, both personally and profes sionally, but it is time to explore new challenges and new opportunities.” The 62-year-old Wilkens, who coached the Hawks for seven years, had two years left on his contract, pay-. ing $10.4 million. The team said it would honor it until he finds a new job. The decision was not unexpected after the Hawks struggled to a 28-54 record, their worst mark since moving to Atlanta in 1968. The team missed the playoffs for the first time since 1992, losing 25 of its final 31 games. “We all concluded mutually that this was a good time to give everybody a chance to start from scratch, start a new chapter in their lives,” Kasten said. Before coming to Atlanta, Wilkens had stints in Cleveland, Seattle and Portland. His career record is 1,179- 981 and his lone NBA championship came with the Sonics in 1979.
