Lacrosse getting full head of steam
A&M men's club lacrosse team uses
BY AMANDA LAWRENCE
The Battalion
The Texas A&M men’s club
lacrosse team has a legacy of success.
This year’s team is living up to the tra
dition and surpassing it.
The team may not be widely rec
ognized around campus, but it has
earned the respect of lacrosse pro
grams nationwide through its overall
ability and current holding of the
Southwestern Lacrosse Association
Championship title.
The Aggies’ recipe for victory is
simple.
“We play as a team,” said A&M
lacrosse coach Tony Scazzero.“The
best team wins, not the best individual
players.”
The well-rounded Aggies’ offense
has only been held to less than 20
goals twice this season.
Defensively, the team is backed by
a wall of defenders comprised entirely
of freshmen and sophomores.
“A key aspect of our team is a very
good rookie class,”said Greg Deeke,
vice president of the men’s lacrosse
team. “Those players will have a
strong impact in years to come.”
For the past five years, the only
team that has ruined the Aggies’ per
fect record was their age-old nemesis,
the University of Texas.
“We’ll blow them (Texas) out of
the water,” Deeke predicted earlier in
the season. And that’s exactly what
they did.
The Aggies defeated the Long
horns twice this season. The first win
came during the regular season, 18-8.
For the second win, the Aggies de
feated the Longhorns in the Southwest
Lacrosse Association (SWLA) cham
pionship game, 22-11.
The Aggies are members of two
separate club leagues, SWLA and U.S.
Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates
(USLIA), and are ranked first and
twelfth, respectively.
The USLIA brought respect to club
lacrosse programs nationwide by en
forcing NCAA regulations.
In addition, USLIA enables teams
that ordinarily would only compete lo
cally to compete with teams from
around the nation.
A&M got the chance recently to
square off against No. 16 Ft. Louis
College (Colorado) and defeated them,
17-9.
“Being in the USLIA allows us to
play teams outside our region with in
creased competition levels,” said se
nior Joel Hill, president of the A&M
men’s lacrosse team. “It gives us a
greater span of competition, and gives
us status and respectability.”
The next hurdle for the Aggies is
the national tournament in St. Louis
on May 10-14. A&M’s squad hopes to
break into the top-10 rankings. The
Aggies can achieve their goal by win
ning their first game in St. Louis.
Even though the Aggies are able to
play a more diverse and competitive
group of teams than in the past be
cause of USLIA, there is still the lack
of games against top 10 ranked teams.
“To play with those guys we have
to step it up; they are on an elite lev
el,” Scazzero said.
“It’s hard to play lesser competi
tion and say you’re ready. We need to
play tougher competition.”
The team competed in the annual
Mardi Gras Tournament, held in New
Orleans, and brought back three wins
and one loss.
The victories came against Univer
sity of Wisconsin, Purdue University
and Northeastern University.
The sole loss was taken by Army
Gras, a men’s club team comprised
of former NCAA Division I, and US
teamwork, victories to gain respect
JP BEATO/The Battalion
A&M men’s club lacrosse members Guy Poorman (L) and Adam
Walkoviak participate in a one-on-one drill during practice.
National team members.
The Aggie lacrosse team sponsors
two tournaments annually.
The college level tournament in the
fall is the largest lacrosse event in
Texas and a high school tournament is
held in the spring. Twenty-three teams
participated this fall.
