noon, as the
Cowboys posted a
5-3 victory over
the Texas A&M
baseball team
before 2,268
fans at Allie P.
Reynolds Stadium in Stillwater.
The victory gave OSU the series
sweep over the Aggies, who drop
to 21-24 and 10-11 in Big 12 play.
OSU took the second game of
the series, 6-2, when pitcher Matt
Smith tossed eight innings, giving
up just two runs and striking out
nine.
The Aggies dropped the open
er, 14-3, to the Cowboys.

with the bases loaded. Mizzou shortstop
Linda Swarts could not handle the ball,
and overthrew the catcher, allowing the
Aggies to score two runs and take the
lead, 4-2. A&M held the Tigers in the top
of the seventh to take the win.
Weikel replaced junior pitcher
Amy Mining in the fourth inning to
get the win for A&M, improving her
record to 7-5.
“Our hitters are doing a great job of
being patient at the plate,” Evans said.
“They are really gaining confidence
and coming through in the clutch.”
“Our team is really pulling through
offensively,” Long said. “Everyone is
hitting solid through the order and
making something happen, and that’s
what it takes to win games.”
The Aggies will be in action again
on Thursday when they take on Sam

Women’s tennis team
downs Kansas State
BY BLAINE DIONNE
The Battalion
Gutsy performances punctuated the
Texas A&M women’s tennis team’s
victory over Kansas State University
Saturday. The women overcame illness
and injuries to defeat the Wildcats and
set the stage for their showdown
against archrival the University of
Texas on Tuesday.
Aside from the medical problems
the Aggies had, the match was full of
clutch perfonnances by A&M.
At the No. 3 singles spot, A&M
freshman Cassie Hass won in straight
sets, 6-3, 6-2, to defeat KSU’s Anna
Pampoulova. Next, senior Lisa Ding
wall took Kansas State’s No. 4 player,
Eva Novotna, by a 6-1, 7-6 (4) score.
Eva Marcial continued her stellar
comeback into the starting lineup with
a 6-4, 6-1 victory over K-State’s Vas-
selina Jeliaskova.
Marcial, a sudden sparkplug for the
Aggies, said later that she has learned
from not playing as much to put more
into each match.
“I just realized in the last couple of
weeks how much I love to play,” Mar
cial said. “This is our last weekend and
we can still win conference, so I decid
ed to let it all hang out.”
The Aggies dropped the other three
singles matches, one due to a forfeit
because of an injury to Martina Ne-
dorostova’s back.
So after splitting singles play with
the Wildcats 3-3, the Aggies were faced
with the daunting task of winning the
match in doubles without the services of
their No. 2 player, freshman Olivia Kar-
likova, who has been sidelined with
bronchitis, and possibly without their
No. 1 player, Nedorostova.
Nedorostova, however, had other
plans. When her back was injured dur
ing the second set in her singles match,
she was forced to forfeit the match.
“She ended up defaulting because
she wanted to save herself for doubles,”
Kleinecke said. “She felt like il'she went
out and played three sets (in singles), it
would hurt us in doubles and she felt
like she could do more good there.”
She was right - playing with a
back wrap and a noticeable amount of
pain, she and partner Lisa Dingwall
were able to defeat their doubles op
ponents, 8-5.

No. 9 Aggies defeat ’Horns in Austin for first time ever
STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS
For the first time in school history, the No. 9-
ranked Texas A&M men’s tennis team beat the No.
13-ranked Texas Longhorns in Austin as they posted a
6-1 win Saturday at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
The Aggies (16-5, 5-1) grabbed the initial lead
with a sweep of doubles. That prowess continued
into singles play where the Aggies won five of six
matches.
Previously, the Aggies had only managed three
wins against the Longhorns, with the last coming in
1998 in the finals of the Big 12 Championships in Lin
coln, Neb.
“It was important for us to get off to a strong start,”
A&M men’s tennis coach Tim Cass said. “It helped
quiet the crowd and helped us gain the momentum.”
Texas has now lost three straight as their record
falls to 15-5 overall and to 5-2 in the league.
Pacing the doubles round for the Aggies was
tandem of Shoun Madden and Dumitru Caradima
who are ranked No. 14 nationally. For the fourth
time this season they beat a top five team with their
8-5 win over No.-2 ranked Michael Blue and Nick
Crowell at No. 1.
In singles. Madden continued his dominance with a
7-6, 6-2, win over Texas’ No. 47 ranked Brandon
Hawk at No. 1. For Madden, it marked his twelfth
straight win as he improved his record to 27-6 overall.
A two-time All-American, Madden is well on his way
to capturing the Big 12 No. 1 Singles Championship.
He is 6-0 is the league with two matches to play.
“Shuon’s game is becoming complete,” Cass said.
“It’s tough for his opponents to beat him and even
harder for them to find a weakness.”
With the win, the No. 2 ranked Madden, moves
closer to taking over the nation’s No. 1 position and
competing for the individual national championship.
“There are a group of 10 gLiys who have a realistic
shoe at the national championship and I think Shoun is
one of them,” Cass said. “He plays somebody that’s
really good every night out. He is very focused and
was very experienced before coming to A&M. He is
turning into a great player.”
In other action, A&M All-American Caradima
took a three-set match from No. 37-ranked Michael
Blue, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, at No. 3.
Meanwhile, Cody Hubbell continued his stellar
season with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Texas’ Craig Edmon
son at No. 4. Hubbell has now improved his record to
22-9 overall and 15-4 in dual play.
A&M freshman Ryan Newport grabbed a three set
win over UT’s Jean Simon, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, at No. 5.
Newport improves to 14-5 overall since joining the
team in January.
The Aggies host UC-Irvine Monday at 6 p.m. at
the Varsity Tennis Center.
