Aprl Vlonday, April 1' The Battalion, The Aggieland win regional await BY RICHARD BRAY The Battalion The members ofTexas A&M’s Department of Stu dent Media always knew that they were among the best in the state. Now they have proof. Over the past weekend, The Aggieland and The Bat talion received top honors from the Texas Intercolle giate Press Association (TIPA) and the Southwestern Journalism Congress (SWJC). The Battalion was awarded Overall Best Newspa per from SWJC, The Aggieland was awarded Best Yearbook and The Battalion was awarded Second Overall Best Newspaper from TIPA TIPA is a competition among the collegiate stu dent publications from within the state of Texas, drawing entries from universities such as the Univer sity of Texas-Austin, Texas Tech University, Texas Christian University and Baylor University . The schools were divided into two categories, those larg er and smaller than 4,000 students. Texas A&M was in the larger division. SWJC is a similar competition among the universi ties from Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. Texas A&M media won numerous awards at SWJC. The Battalion w'on Best Newspaper, Best Sports Fea ture, Best Sports Photograph. Best News Photograph, Best Editorial, and Best Investigative Story. The Ag- gieland won Best Black and White Photo, Best Color Photo, Best Sports Action Photo, Best Overall Book Design, Best Yearbook and Best Cover. Robert Wegener, professor and general manager of student media, said the aw ards came as no surprise to him. “We have great students and great resources, so it makes sense that we would be recognized,” he said. Marium Mohiuddin, the Spring 20(X) editor in chief and a senior English and biology major, said the awards reflected highly on the quality of statfin the media pro grams despite limited resources. “We came in second behind [the University of Texas-Austin newspaper] at TIPA, and we won first over them at SWJC,” she said. “That says a lot con sidering we don't have the large stall'or funding that The Daily Texan does.” Sallie Turner, the Fall l l )99 editor in chief won the TIPA Best On-Site Feature Photo for the second year in a row, she said felt the SWJC Best Newspaper award best reflects the quality of The Battalion. “I think the Best Newspaper award from SWJC' is the most important award because we were competing against three different states,” said Turner, a senior jour- Trisha Morelock, the editor of the 1999 and a senior journalism major, said the awardssj the yearbook the respect they deserve. “Those aw ards mean we are the best ye state ol Texas,” she said. “It gets the yearbookij respect. It shows that we have a top-notch pul department here.” Morelock said the numerous traditionsher; easier for the Aggieland\o stand apart Iromtj yearbooks. “()ur traditions are so strong and so other univ ersity that it makes our yearbook tmii all the others,” she said. “If you look in the book, you get a real sense of the history am lion and how proud A&M is of their traditio nalism major. Turner said The Battalion received Texas Intercollegiate Press Association Southwestern journalism the award due to the quality of news overall BEST NEWSPAPER coverage throughout the year. “Our coverage of Bonfire was ex emplary,” she said. “It was the finest piece of student journalism that I’ve ever seen. If we had done a mediocre job on it, we would not have won awards. Texas A&M should be proud of the student journalists who work for The Battalion." Turner said the 1999 Aggie Bonfire collapse was a particularly challenging story' because the reporters had to play the dual role of student-in-mouming and impartial reporter. “We were students, and we had to mourn and to grieve, but at the same time we had to be journalists because there w ere a lot of others who were looking to The Battalion to figure out what was going on,” she said. ail l 81 EDITORIAL The BEST NEWS STORY WMR 1 sma rooi now With all eqi vd that has PH( Kimberly (kntilt ''Agj'ies grie'eaflt; BA bead of s\ students die... ^te him and h Bion to the s r signals tl JP Beato "lYapped" BIST IN-DEPTH OR INVESTIGATIVE STORY s| Sallie Turner “Bonfire iraged) DE' BEST SPORTS COLUMN st Caleb Ml Daniel "This is vour..." .LUSTRATION Sallie Turner & JP Beato "Omaha Bound'’ BEST EDITORIAL GABRIEL RUENES and JP BEATOThiI Monday Campus Calendar Catholic Student Association Sin gle Women's Bible Study.
