^niiM ou P le barged in Internet,
pornography scandal
D/vLLAS (AP) — A federal grand jury has charged a Fort
brth couple with distributing child pornography over the In-
met in an international scheme that involved Website operators
mp^ussia and Indonesia.
U.S. Attorney Paul Coggins announced the indictments
day, calling them “the first in history
get foreign webmasters and their cor-
il° -conspirators in the United States.”
Named in the indictments were Thomas
4/ jeedy 37, and his wife Janice Reedy, 31,
)th pf Fort Worth, as well as their home-
ased business Landslide Inc.; R.W.
ma and Hanny Ingganata, both of In-
Mjjsia, and Boris Greenberg of Russia,
eedys were arrested Wednesday.
ie panel returned a total of 87 counts
st the five, including charges of sexu-
exploitation of minors and distribution of
iild pornography.
Joggins said he would attempt to extradite the overseas res-
They are not in custody. The Reedys appeared for an ini-
■□urt appearance Thursday afternoon before a Fort Worth fed-
al judge. A detention hearing has been set for April 18. The
jmment alleges that Landslide provided a credit card verifi-
service that acted as an electronic gateway for thousands
ibscribers to gain access to photos and movies of minors be-
the ages of 4 and 12 engaging in sexual acts at various In
ternet Web sites operated by Kusuma, Greenberg and Ingganata.
The Reedys collected more than $1 million and paid the oth
er three defendants about two-thirds of the fees, Coggins said.
“Landslide was doing a lucrative and profitable business
in kiddie porn,” Coggins said. “These individuals were will
ing to destroy young lives to line their
pockets.”
A1 Holmes, U.S. Postal Inspector in
Charge, said that for $29.95per month,
“subscribers could get access to such
sites as ‘Child Rape,’ ’Children Forced
to Pom’ and ‘Children of God.’
“It is clear by these titles there is no
doubt what services they were provid
ing,” Holmes said.
The maximum penalty for each count
listed in the indictment is 15 years in
prison and a $250,00 fine. Landslide faces
a possible $500,000 per count fine and for
feiture of all child pornography as well as assets of the corporation.
Coggins said the Internet has allowed pomographers to easily ped
dle obscene materials around the world.
“It is an international problem,” he said. “It plagues all coun
tries and we have to address it internationally.”
Coggins would not say if authorities in Indonesia and Rus
sia were cooperating with the investigation. He also would not
say in what cities the overseas defendants lived.

On the other side of the courtroom
were family and friends of Roland
Groom, who was 17 years old and a
high school senior when he was killed
during a melee outside an Arlington so
cial club on Aug. 3, 1996.
Gallagher was an attorney for 18
years before becoming a judge in Jan
uary, and has never seen a reaction like
that ofWashington and his mother. Nei
ther had Moore, a court employee for
more than 12 years.
The judge planned to meet with de
fense attorneys on Thursday to review the
contempt charges.
“Let’s let some time pass and see what
we can do,” Gallagher said. “But I will tell
you, when I visited with jurors, the first
question the foreman asked me was did I
admonish the defendant. The jury had
even picked up on what happened.”
Calls to the office of defense attorney
Danny Bums went unanswered Wednes
day night.
Defense attorneys conceded during the
trial that Washington’s gun was used in the
shooting. But Washington said in a video
taped confession to police that his best
friend fired the fatal shot.
Eyewitnesses for the state identified
Washington as the killer. Eyewitnesses
for the defense testified that Washington
was not the man they saw firing a gun.

Officials warn of
shrimp shortage
AUSTIN (AP) — Texas’ gulf coast
shrimping fisheries are in danger of
collapse unless the commercial har
vest is reduced, state officials warn.
An 18-month study by the Texas
Parks and Wildlife Department found
a 30 percent decline in adult spawn
ing shrimp in the Gulf of Mexico since
the ’70s, meaning fewer shrimp are
available to replenish the population.
Police find
body of
missing boy
DALLAS (/yf ) — Police found the
body Thursday of a missing 6-year-old
boy in a Dallas home where officials a
day earlier discovered a slain elderly
man and woman.
Authorities identified as the victim
as the couple’s 6-year-old great-grand
son, Corinthian Ransom, who has been
missing since Monday. The body was
found Thursday afternoon in a closet,
hidden behind some clothes, said Dal
las Sr. Corp. Cheryl Convery.
Investigators apparently returned to
the home Thursday to make sure they
hadn't missed anything during their ini
tial investigation. Ransom’s mother, In
dira Silas, discovered the bodies of her
grandparents — 77-year-old Manuel
“Dusty” Gillens and 73-year-old Nel
lie Faye Gillens — on Wednesday. The
Gillens, who reportedly kept a large
sum of money in their house, also were
robbed, police said. Authorities were
using a helicopter and dogs on Thurs
day to search for Ransom. He had last
been seen at Amelia Earhart Learning
Center on Monday.
Deloris Gene Powell, 52, who rented
a room in the Gillens’ home, was appre
hended Tuesday in Rockwall County
while driving the victims’ pickup truck,
Dallas Lt. Ron Waldrop said Thursday.
A 3-year-old — qne of two missing
great-grandsons — was with Powell.
Tire child, whose name was not released,
had suffered some scratches, police said.
It is not clear whether Corinthian
was ever with Powell and his brother.
Powell gave Rockwall police a false
name for herself and the child when she
was arrested. However, when the child
failed to respond to the name, Rockwall
investigators issued a bulletin to nearby
law enforcement agencies.
Tire pickup truck Powell was dri
ving was recognized by one of the Dal
las investigators as one missing from
the Gillens’ home, Waldrop said.
Powell has been charged with pos
session of narcotics in Rockwall County
and kidnapping in Dallas, Waldrop said.
No one has been charged yet with
the slayings, police said.
