Senate
removes
S.C. flag
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The
NAACP remained unsatisfied Thursday
and said a boycoft will continue after the
South Carolina Senate gave final approval
to a bill to remove the Confederate flag
from the Statehouse dome.
The bill now is headed to the Republi
can-controlled House, which on Thursday
passed a bill to create official state holidays
recognizing Martin Luther King Jr. and
Confederate Memorial Day.
House Republicans, many of whom
support the flag, recognize a shift in pub
lic opinion.
“I think there’s a realization that, long
tenn this is harmful to our state,” said Re
publican House Speaker David Wilkins, a
flag supporter. “I think that’s persuaded
many people to find an area of compro
mise. The boycott certainly has not been
positive. The national attention we’ve got
ten has not been positive.”
Some black I louse members think the
Senate compromise to fly a Confederate
Hag in front of the Statehouse is too visi
ble. And the executive committee of the
National Association for the Advancement
of Colored People voted unanimously
against the proposal, said state President
James Gallman. NAACP President Kweisi

she said.
In a move to soothe jitters
among the GOP’s conservative
base, the Bush campaign has
been telling key religious ac
tivists that the Texas governor
would host the meeting, but not
change his conservative views.
