W hen most people think of hemp,
visions of a bearded, munchie-af-
flicted person — whose every
other word is “duuude”—pops into their
minds. But medical research and nutri
tionists have found a new way to use this
organic material that is changing the way
people think about Cannabis.
Author Chris Conrad, an interna
tionally known expert on the histori
cal, medical, social, economic and
ecological aspects of Cannabis hemp,
has testified as an expert witness on
industrial hemp before the Superior
Courts throughout the State of Cali
fornia and has authored four books
on marijuana.
Conrad’s experience with his fa
ther’s cancer drove him to write these
books. In his latest bookMemp for
Health — The Medicinal and Nutri
tional Uses of Cannabis Sativa, he de
scribes the nutritional, healing, spiritu
al and recreational purposes of this
often “misunderstood” herb.
In 1998, a group of farmers and
trade organizations argued before the
U.S. District Court in Lexington, Ky.,
that industrial hemp was different from
marijuana and that hemp’s prohibition
by the Drug Enforcement Administra
tion violated the constitutional doctrine
of separation of powers of government
because the plant poses none of the
psychoactive problems caused by its
cousin, marijuana.
An article in The New York Times
about the Lexington case said that ’‘sci
entists determined that THC consti
tutes less than 1 percent of hemp’s
weight, not enough to cause any psy
choactive effects, compared with 4
percent to 7 percent for marijuana.”
Jason Thibodaux, a sales clerk for
TEarthArt in Bryan, said that EarthArt
sells hats, bags, shirts and thread made
from hemp.
“It’s kind of expensive, but it lasts
forever. You could throw a bag [made
from hemp] filled with bricks down
stairs,” he said.
Jennifer King, a senior education
major, said she supports the use of hemp
because of its strength.
“Paper made out of hemp is
stronger and more durable than regu
lar paper and is better than regular pa
per as far as not killing trees.”
One of the advantages of using hemp
seed oil lies in its nutritional benefits.
Hemp oil contains fatty acids such
as Omega-3 and Omega-6. The oil can
be used in a variety of ways and can be
used to replace any cooking oil. It can
also be used as a topping over rice, pas
ta or potatoes.
Shelly Soha, an employee at Bra
zos Natural Foods, said that hemp pro
vides vitamins that are lacking in
everyday diets.
“It’s a complete protein,” Soha
said. “It has all the amino-acids in
it,and it is only estimated that today’s
average diet supplies only 20 percent
of the required amount of omega 3, a
fatty acid that the body needs.”
Soha said her workplace carries a
lot of hemp-made products.
Hemp oil also can be used for natur
al health care and first aid, massage and
soap making. The oil contains Gamma-
linolenic acid (GLA), an important fat
ty acid that promotes healthy skin, hair
and nails and helps reduce inflamma
tion. Refined hemp oil can be used for
manufacturing soap, cosmetics, indus
trial lubricants and machinery oils.
“It makes a good lotion,” Soha said,
“because it is a good moisturizer. We
have it in all kinds of body care products
— lotions, shampoos and lip balms.”
Hemp thread is is another product
in demand. The thread, which is avail
able in several colors, can be used to
make jewelry.
“Naturally, hemp is a tannish-
brovvn color. Any other color is dyed,”
Thibodaux said.
Thibodaux said in addition to its
strength, hemp can also be planted
again and again in the same place with
out depleting the soil.
Other establishments have jumped
on the hemp bandwagon. The Galaxy
Global Eatery in New York City, takes
cooking with hemp to the next level.
From the menus on ‘tree free’ hemp
paper, to the hemp power smoothie, to
the hemp garden burger, this eatery
takes hemp nutrition to the next level.
Hemp seeds, aside from being nutri
tional and useful also taste better too.
It is described as having a “pleasant,
clean, nutty flavor.”
The owner of the restaurant, Denis
Cicero, said he wanted to create a unique
atmosphere at a reasonable price.
“I wanted to create a truly interna
tional dining experience with a hemp
seed orientation,” Cicero said.
He is also currently contracting
with a local brewer to make a hemp
beer and is working on opening a hemp
baker}' to further utilize the numerous
uses of hemp.
