High Fidelity is, in a word, hilarious. It has one of the best ensemble casts
in years and includes both John and Joan Cusack, Tim Robbins, Catherine
Zeta-Jones and Lily Taylor, who collectively, make this movie into one beck
of a good time.
Rob Gordon (Cusack) is a record store owner obsessed with top-live lists and
finding out what has gone wrong with his love life since it began in second grade.
On bis journey toward understanding the past, Gordon unwittingly begins to piece
together bis present and suddenly wonders if it is not too late to get back togeth
er with his most recent ex.
High Fidelity is definitely not rocket science. Familiar story lines and obvious
cliches abound in this film. There is also enough physical comedy to fill a couple
of episodes of “The Three Stooges.” I iowever, what makes this movie so appeal
ing is Cusack’s character who is irresistible and pathetic, which is eifectively cou
pled with non-stop wacky conversations between some of the most interesting fic
tional characters in recent film history. Cusack isn’t going to win any awards from
this performance but his sense of comedic timing is impeccable as he banters,
screams and cries his way through a great movie.
Director Stephen Frears (The Grifters, Dangerous Liasons) makes the most of
using the pop-roek background as a new setting for the classic tale of love, loss
and dating. Also, by breaking down the fourth wall and having Cusack’s charac
ter talk directly into the camera, Frears creates an instant connection.
This movie is probably a bit crude for the more conservative.audience mem
bers, but it is absolutely ideal for the younger generation. Not only are the laughs
frequent and clever, but this movie strikes a romantic note with the audience,
since most guys will be able to identify with the main character. The soundtrack
