The Women’s Week 2000 committee will present
awards to four individuals who have repeatedly helped to
promote women's issues during the Women’s Week awards
luncheon held in the Bush Presidential Conference Center
at Texas A&M Tuesday.
Graduate student Heather Brown, assistant director of
engineering student programs Jan Rinehart, associate pro
fessor of construction science and architecture Nancy Hol
land and Associate Provost and Dean of Faculties Janis Stout
will be honored with Women’s Week awards.
Award winners are first nominated through an open nom
ination session. A committee composed of students, staff and
faculty members then review the nominations to determine
who they feel is best suited for the award.
“Award winners are recognized for their dedication
and efforts to encourage and promote sensitivity to and
awareness of issues that relate to women,” said Jill Raupe,
graduate admissions supervisor for the Department of
Journalism.
Jennifer Harris, flight director for Mars Pathfinder Op
erations and NASA employee, will serve as guest speaker
at the luncheon.

— Sherry Unello
Women's Week 2000 committee chairperson
Texas A&M,” said Sherry Unello, chairperson of the
Women’s Week 2000 committee.
The Women’s Week 2000 committee has planned a series
of events including a display in the MSC bookstore of books
written by A&M women writers, and a collection of poems
written by Phillis Weatley on display in Cushing Library
through March 31. An exhibit in the West Campus library, Rur
al Texas Women at Work, will be set up through March 23.
“When you first walk into the exhibit, you think, ‘What’s
the big deal?’ Nowadays, anyone can bake a pie and clean
the house, all in the course of a few hours,” said Lalaine Lit
tle, coordinator of marketing for the Forsyth Center Gal
leries. “But what we have to remember is that during these
women’s time, electricity was rare and they had to do every
thing by hand.”
The exhibit features pictures of rural women between
1930 and 1960 and is on loan from the agriculture extension
services of A&M.
A play cast with three women, “Womyn with Wyngs,”
is being sponsored by the Women’s Week committee. It
will be presented on March 30 in Rudder Theater and
shows how the different women deal with obstacles. The
play is open to the general public, and tickets can be pur
chased in the Rudder Box Office. Tickets are $3 for stu
dents and $5 for the public.
