The Texas A&M Softball
Team prepares for action as it
heads to San Marcos to take on the
Southwest Texas State University
Bobcats at 7 p.m.
The Bobcats are 18-8 this year
and 12-5 at home. Their top pitch
er, Jessica Chase, has a 13-5
record and a 1.16 ERA.
A&M coach Jo Evans said the
Aggies will have to be on top of
their game, especially offensively,
to defeat SWT.
“Teams are only hitting .200
against Jessica Chase,” she said.
“We know we’re going to have to
play well against them, and our
hitters are going to have to be very
disciplined at the plate.”
A&M's big gun, junior pitch
er Amy Mining (11 -4), will get the
start for the Aggies today.
“We have a lot of confidence in
Amy,” Evans said. “She’s been
throwing great, and she knows
what has to be done to get the win.”
SWT defeated the University of
Texas 3-0 in Austin on March I.
“We can't overlook [South
west Texas],” Evans said. “That
win against UT was huge for
them. They’re going to come in
thinking that they can beat us, so
we need to play this game with
a lot of intensity.”
Evans said SWT tends to be
overlooked because of its past
reputation.
“This is their first year to re
ally play well,” she said. “In the
past, they’ve been a team we did
n't have to pay much attention to,
but they’ve really built up their
program and are beating great
teams now.”
The Aggies (16-7) placed sec
ond last weekend in the Aggie In
vitational II. They finished the dou
ble-round robin tournament at 5-1,
with their only loss at the hands of
the University of New Mexico.

Women’s golf finishes sixth at GTE a MO”moria
BY JASON LINCOLN
The Battalion
The field was too strong for the
Texas A&M University women’s golf
team Tuesday. The Aggies placed sixth
out of 16 in their host meet, the GTE
“Mo”morial at Pine Forest Country
Club in I louston.
Weather and inexperience in the fi
nal day combined to spell the fate of the
Aggies. The team entered the last day’s
18 holes in sixth place after scoring 317
and 307 during Monday’s 36 holes.
The Aggies started their final 18
strong, yet struggled through windy
conditions on the par-72 course to fin
ish with a score of 321 for a 54-hole to
tal of945.
The final day's drop-off was
not severe enough for the Aggies
to lose their grasp on sixth place,
but also was not the finish Texas
A&M women’s golf coach Jeanne
Sutherland had been expecting.
“We were 14-over par on the last
three holes as a team,” Sutherland said.
“That’s pretty much the story of the day
for us. Our finish prevented us from
catching those in front.”
Four Big 12 Conference opponents
finished ahead of the Aggies, leaving
A&M with some catching up to do be
fore postseason.
The University of Missouri led the
field with 928, successfully defending
its 1999 win at the “Mo”morial.
