Suspect’s home searched
Police find 'anti-white’ material in apartmen
riday. Mnrcl
WILKINSBURG, Pa. (AP)—Police
said today that the African-American
man charged with shooting five white
men in a Pittsburgh suburb had “anti
white” writings in his apartment.
Ronald Taylor, accused of killing two
and critically wounding three others,
singled out whites, according to wit
nesses. One former hostage said today
the gunman told a fellow African-Amer
ican, “Not you, sister,” as he threatened
to shoot other hostages.
Taylor, 39, was arrested Wednesday
after surrendering following the shoot
ings at his apartment building and at two
restaurants and a brief hostage-taking at
an office building.
Lt. John Brennan, of the Allegheny
County police, said today that a search at
Taylor’s apartment Wednesday night
found writings he characterized as being
angry at whites. He refused to disclose
their contents and said he could not make
them available to the public.
“They were just some of his thoughts.
It was basically anti-white, anti-Jew,”
Brennan said.
Brennan said charges under the
state’s ethnic intimidation statute would
probably be brought against Taylor, who
was expected to be arraigned on charges
other than the criminal homicide counts
in Wilkinsburg this afternoon.
“He said, 'You're
all white trash,
racist pigs”
— John De Witt
maintenance worker
An incident with maintenance work
ers at Taylor’s apartment building appar
ently touched off the rage, authorities said.
Police Sgt. John Fisher, who negoti
ated with Taylor during the standoff,
said the suspect was upset that his apart
ment door wasn't fixed fast enough.
All the people shot were white
males. But authorities stressed that the
motives for the rampage may be more
complex that racial animosity.
“There have obviously been soi
racial overtones, but he appears lobe;
angry young man,” Wilkinsburgpol
Chief Gerald Brewer told NBC Vis

“He was very angry apparentlysi
lot of different things, but one can
a lot of different conclusions from Ml
The trouble started Wednesday
three maintenance workers went toll
lor’s apartment to fix a door.
“He said, ‘You’re all white trasi
racist pigs,”’ John DeWitt, oneoftb
maintenance workers, told TlieAssoci

‘You’re dead.’”
Taylor then allegedly shot theoila
white worker and set his own apart

restaurants.
One man was shot at a Burger Knj
and three others at a McDonald’s dims
lunch time.
Taylor is charged with two counti

2 Palestinians killed in Israeli shoot-oul
TAIBEH, Israel (AP) — Israeli se
curity forces swooped down on an ex-
plosive-laden hide-out before dawn to
day in the Arab town of Taibeh in
northern Israel, killing two Palestinians
in a shoot-out.
Prime Minister Ehud Barak said the
commandos squelched a major terrorist
attack aimed at sabotaging the peace
process, and his police minister called it
the latest incident in a resurgence of
Palestinian terrorist activity.
Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim
Sneh said the attackers belonged to
Hamas, the largest Palestinian Islamic
group. “They intended to lay explosives
in the center of one of the Israeli towns
and to inflict very heavy casualties,”
Sneh told foreign reporters.
In Gaza, Hamas leader Sheik Ahmed
Yassin said lie remained unaware of what
his organization’s military wing was
planning but said that recent reports that
Hamas had suspended violent activity
were wrong.
“The military wing operations con
tinue until we reach our goal,” he said.
Hamas has carried out a series of terror
attacks to disrupt Israeli-Palestinian
peacemaking.
Police Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami
suggested that Israeli police were alert
ed by Palestinian security forces.
“As of now we feel there is coopera
tion [with the Palestinians], so the situa
tion is under control,” he told Israel radio.
Ben-Ami linked the raid to two other
recent alerts of potential terrorist attacks.
In both cases, the attackers w ere stopped
in the planning stages.
“I wouldn’t say that the level (of ter
ror) has been raised, but there have
been more and more incidents,” Ben-
Ami said.
The police commandos surrounded
the run-down two-story house on a street
not far from the town square not long af
ter midnight.
At about 4 a.m., they used mega
phones to order the gunmen out, police
spokeswoman Sivan Kedmi said.
One emerged, and was taken into po
lice custody, she said; then another two
came out, one carry ing a pistol, the oth
er a suitcase packed with explosives.
