She calls her music “southern alter native,” with a mix of blues, folk and rock influences. “I like to think that my music is my own style,” Kruger said. Music has been a part of Kruger’s life for a long time. “At the Arts Magnet School [Booker T. Washington High School], which is one of those artsy high schools, I started play ing jazz,” she said. Kruger said that after she tried to find herself musically in high school, she came upon writing. “I was playing old jazz standards, but when I got to college I realized I needed to write stories in music,” she said. “I found I was happiest in a career that would let me do a couple of things.” Shifting her lifestyle a little, Kruger moved to Los Angeles after graduation to attend the University of Southern Califor nia. She studied under the music industry program, which increased her under standing of the business side of music. “I am a business-savvy artist,” she said. “I book all these tours and have my own Website (www.texasgirl.org).” After school, Kruger returned to Texas because she said she felt it best suited her and her music. “ ‘Texas music’ is a term,” she said. “I was getting into classic country and fell; would be appropriate to be here where roots are. There are things that I do mis from L.A., like my band.” Kruger is currently touring solo, she does have a band with whom she play when she visits Los Angeles. She said that right now she is in struggling stages, and is playing at bars “It is a slow process, but 1 am gel by,” she said. “I can see people respond ing well to my music.” Kruger said she writes her own ms because she wants to make sure tl sings what she feels. “My music is about my life andtlif things I experience because 1 something I can write the best about Kruger said.
