U.S. Census Bureau Director Kenneth Prew itt joined Flores at a special Mass for Census 2000 at San Fernan do Cathedral. Local officials said San Antonio is the only city in the country to hold a major religious serv ice to help launch the national population count that occurs every 10 years. Prewitt said the church's involvement in Census 2000 is an important symbol to the Hispanic community. " Many of you have come to this country with a dream to make a better life for yourself and your children,” Pre witt told parishioners, according to a report published in Monday's editions of the San Antonio Express-News. “The census is a way to help you realize that dream.” Speaking mostly in Spanish. Flores said those who re fused to participate in Census 2000 were like the para lyzed man that Christ had to heal before he could stand up end acknow ledge his worth. U.S. Rep. Charles Gonzalez, D-Texas, who chairs the Census Subcommittee of the Hispanic Caucus, said the Mass was an example of San Antonio institutions work ing together to assure a more complete census count. "We are determined to outpace and out perform other cities." said Gonzalez, noting that almost 39.000 San An tonio residents w ere not counted in the 1990 census. An estimated $73 million in federal funds was not al located to the city as a result of the undercount. Pre - Law Society: Baylor law school will be discussed at 7 p.m. in 111 Koldus. "(The plaque] highlights a tremendous life, though it was cut short.” Southerland said. “All of us w ill be impacted all of the days of our lives by the young people that we know (who died in the collapse] and ail the effects of the tragedy.” Southerland said the plaque has been in his office for the past few weeks, but he decided to give it to FHK because that is where Powell lived. “The right place for it is [the FHK Complex] be cause that’s where Chad was and I’m real pleased to be able to bring it here,” he said. Continued from Page 1 A proposal has been presented to the Faculty Senate for the increase of the University Authorized Tuition in crease of two dollars to S40 per semester credit hour, generating approximately S2.2 million in revenue. According to the A&M’s Finance Office, this would help support faculty salary increases that have fallen be hind faculty at other universities, and would increase the faculty merit raises, which have recently only kept pace with inflation. The cost of a 3 percent faculty merit increase alone would be more than S4 million. Krumm said that “even if tuition w ent up. w e would still be in the back of the pack. A&M ranks 17 out of 31 peer institutions in terms of average student tuition.” Peer institutions are universities that most closely re semble A&M, like the University of Texas, Michigan State University and Arizona State University. ”If college becomes a luxury that an increasing per centage of our population cannot afford, it will expand the economic divide between the haves and have-nots and stum our economic growth.” said Sen.
