CALL FOR STUDENT RESEARCH PROPOSALS
Outstanding juniors who will have completed nine hours of honors coursework before the fall semester and who
have at least a cumulative grade point average of 3.4 are invited to apply for participation in the University
Undergraduate Research Fellows Program during their senior year. The Fellows Program offers a two-semester
independent research experience that culminates in a senior honors thesis. It is the most prestigious research oppor
tunity available to undergraduates at Texas A&M and provides participants w ith opportunities usually extended only
to students pursuing graduate degrees. Over the last several years, 40 to 70 students have been selected annually as
Fellows based upon faculty review of research proposals submitted to the University Honors Program. The Fellows
Program feature a close, master-apprentice relationship between student researcher and faculty advisor and involves
both students and advisors in periodic interdisciplinary group meetings to encourage the development of a scholar
ly community.
Faculty acquainted with capable juniors who meet the criteria for participation in the Undergraduate Fellows
Program may wish to encourage them to consider preparing a proposal. An informational meeting concerning the
2000-2001 Fellows Program, open to faculty as well as students, has been scheduled for 4:00 PM on Thursday, 17
February, in 292B MSC. Research proposals will be due on Tuesday, 28 March. Students w ill know whether they

‘Peanuts’ creator Schulz dies at
SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP)
“Peanuts” creator Charles Schulz died at
home following a battle with cancer, just
as the last original cartoon ofhis half-cen
tury career was being published in news
papers worldwide.
Tire 77-year-old Schulz was diagnosed
with colon cancer in November, and his
spirits recently sagged as he battled the dis
ease and pondered retirement, said Monte
Schulz, his eldest son. *
“I think maybe he decided that his true
passion was in the strip, and when that was
gone, it was over,” Monte Schulz said
Sunday. “1 Ic had done what he had want
ed to do, and that was it for him....”
The son said that while the cause of
death Saturday wasn’t known, “it appears
he died in his sleep, almost between
breaths.” I lis wife, Jeannie, was with him
when he died.
