The Battalion
When Natalio Hernandez, a senior construction science
major, was first assigned to a student team that would design
an addition to the Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, he
was not sure he was up to the task.
Now, he says it w'as an experi
ence he will value forever.
“At first, we were all really un
sure of what w as going to be ex
pected of us,” Hernandez said. “But
what we found was an opportunity
to put everything we had learned in
college to work in a real-life set
ting.”
Hernandez’s team’s design was
selected from the designs of eight
A&M engineering student teams
who, last fall, were given the task
of designing a 720,000 square foot
high-tech facility for the medical center by the College of
Architecture.
“They [the medical center| were just trying to get a fresh
perspective before they accepted a design for the new facil
ity,” Hernandez said. “That is definitely what they got.”
Marc E. Leediker, vice president of the Children’s Med
ical Center’s Facility Management Group, said the final de
sign of the addition will not be exactly the way the team de
signed it, but ideas from the team will be incorporated into
the final design.
Eric Geppelt, a member of the selected team and a senior
environmental design major, said that whether or not h

ions and try to work with them.”
Lcedikc said the Children's Med
ical Center is considered one of the
nation's finest pediatric hospitals,
and is the only one in Dallas that
deals exclusively with a wide v ariety
of diseases and disorders among
children — from a simple eye exam
to major organ transplants.
The current addition project
aims to take the medical center one
step further in the research department.
“This new facility will he organized around the concept
of shortening the time from research bench to bedside ap
plication,” Leediker said.
The teams were comprised of students from live diller-
ent classes from the Departments of Architecture, Construc
tion Science, Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning.
Each included one graduate student as a team leader and
one graduate student as a design leader.
The selected team's design will he showcased Feb. 10 and
11 at Rudder Theater during the Rowlett Lecture Series.
