Promoter moves party from Galveston
GALVESTON (AP) — Upset with
Mhc current plans for Galveston’s annual
■Beach Party Weekend, a former promot-
ler has decided to put on a different kind
lof party — and in a different coastal
Pexas city.
Kappa Beach Party Inc. has applied
llbr a permit for a Zydeco and Cajun mu-
Isic festival on the north end of the Cor-
Ipus Christi Beach, Dan Whitworth, as-
Isislant director of Corpus Christi’s parks
land recreation department, said.
Kappa Beach Party co-owner Kevin
■Sesay announced last week that the pro
moting company would organize events
in Corpus Christi because it had been ex
cluded from this year's Beach Party
Weekend in Galveston, according to the
Galveston County Daily News.
Galveston officials handed over the
event’s promotion to another group, Kap-
paFest 20()(), in exchange for $375,000,
more than enough money to cover the
city's cost of providing security and traf
fic control, the newspaper reported.
The Galveston event has grown over
the last 15 years from an annual gather
ing of black fraternity members called
Kappa Weekend. Last year’s party drew
an estimated 140,000 visitors, mostly
black college students, and spurred offi
cials to estimate crowds of200,000-plus
in coming years.
Growing apprehension from some
residents about the event led Mayor
Roger “Bo” Quiroga last year to suggest
the opposition was racially rooted.
“I’ve seen both the Beach Party and
Mardi (iras, and there is no difference
hut the color of the skin,” Quiroga was
quoted as saying. “Racism in this coun
try is alive and well.”
