Gregory attended A&M when it
was called Texas A&M College
and all students were members of
the Corps of Cadets. Reveille I was
the mascot at the time and the
yearbook was called the Long
horn, not the Aggieland.
Following graduation, Gregory
completed pilot training at Ran
dolph Field and flight training at
Kelly Field and was then assigned
as a pursuit pilot in Hawaii.
Gregory flew B-17s as a combat
pilot in the Pacific theatre during
the early part of World War II.
In June 1942, Gregory was a pi
lot in the battle of Midway that
bombed and sank a Japanese air
craft carrier. He flew 57 combat
hours in four days during the battle.
In the latter part of World War
II, he flew B-24s in Italy.
Gregory’s daughter, Carolyn
Sonleitner, said even though he
had been a decorated and cele
brated hero of war, he did not
have a positive view of war.
“He thought that no matter
what the outcome was, war is still
horrible,” she said.
Sonleitner said her father was
modest about his achievements in
battle and did not speak about his
experiences often.
His assignments during his ac
tive career include Headtjuarters,
Strategic Air Command; Head
quarters, U.S. Air Force and as
chief of the U.S. Air Force Mission
in El Salvador. He also served as
deputy chief of staff for personnel
for the Air Force Cambridge Re
search Center in Boston, Mass.
His decorations include the Sil
ver Star, the Air Meda
Commendation Medal.

Tania Fongemie, a senior political
science major, said that nothing
about tonight’s Silver Taps cere
mony will be different, but because
of the tragedies that have affected
the campus this year, students, fac
ulty and staff should reflect on how
fortunate they are to be a part of
this university.
Due to the anticipated increase
of attendance, Parking Traffic and
Transportation Services (PTTS) will
close Old Main Drive and Houston
Street from 9:30 until 11:30 p.m.
This will close Lamar Street to the
MSG, Houston Street from BizzelL
Hall to the A.P. Beutal Health Cen

Yesterday’s article “A&M de
nies licenses to retailers selling
memorial T-shirts” incorrectly
said that Collegiate Licensing
“forced" Inspirations’ to remove
its “Muster” T-shirts from its
shelves. It should have read “Bon
fire” instead of “Muster” T-shirts.
A spokesperson for Inspirations
said Inspirations was not “forced"
to remove the shirts but was asked
by Collegiate Licensing to remove
the “Bonfire’’shirts because Inspira
tions had violated a licensing
agreement by altering the design
without University approval by
adding a ribbon to the sleeve .
The spokesperson also said it
was the owner’s decision to do
nate the remaining T-shirts and
profits to the Texas A&M Tradi
tions Council.
