Harriers ready for South Central Region
BY BLAINE DIONNE
The Battalion
The long wait for the Texas A&M men's and
women’s cross country teams is over.
The meet the Aggie Harriers have been fo
cusing on all year, the NCAA South Central Re
gional in Denton, is finally upon them Satur
day.
The top two qualifiers from this and other re
gional meets will receive automatic bids to the
national meet, while 13 at-large bids will be
awarded Nov. 15 to round out a field of 31 teams
in both the men’s and. women’s divisions at the
NCAA Championships.
Although the Aggie women have never qual
ified for the NCAAs and the men have not qual
ified since 1982, this year’s team is optimistic
about their chances.
Second-year A&M cross country coach Dave
Hartman said he is pleased with the men’s
chances because of their performances earlier
this season.
The Aggie men currently are ranked fourth
in the Region behind the University of Arkansas,
Rice University and the University of Texas.
“Our training has us peaking at the right time
of the year,” Hartman said. "We have some con
fidence because we were right there with Texas
two weeks ago [at the Big 12 meetl, and we are
going to have to fight it out with them and Rice
for that second spot behind Arkansas.
“We could really make some noise at this
meet, because we’ve got several guys who are
experienced at this level in [Scott] Lengefeld and
[Stephen] Erath. Plus, Carl Stewart always runs
well at North Texas, and our younger runners
were here last year and they know what kind of
effort it takes to get that automatic bid.”
Hartman said he is just as confident with the
ramm
women’s team this year becausethajL,
