Pakistani rulers file charges 1^- Death count reaches 7,600 aft
cr»n ^ supercyclone hit India's coast
of treason against Sharif
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP)
— Nearly one month after
throwing out the civilian gov
ernment, Pakistan’s new mili
tary rulers today accused de
posed premier Nawaz Sharif
and eight others of treason and
kidnapping — charges that car
ry the death penalty.
A formal complaint was
filed in connection with an in
cident Oct. 12 in which Sharif
refused landing rights to a pas
senger aircraft carrying Army
Chief Gen. Pervaiz Musharraf.
The general responded that
day by ousting Sharif in a
bloodless coup.
Under Pakistani law, a
complaint was lodged with
the police. A police inquiry will
now be launched and formal
charges made.
Sharif, who has been in mil
itary custody since his over
throw, was also accused of as
sembling people with the
purpose to kill and physical en-
dangerment, both of which car
ry prison terms.
Among those accused in the
complaint are Sharif’s former
adviser Ghaus Ali Shah, former
director of Pakistan’s national
airline Shahid Haqqan Abbasi,
former Police Inspector Rana
Maqbool and former director
general of Pakistan Civil Avia
tion Aminuddin Chaudhry.
The complaint stems from
the high-altitude drama that oc
curred over the Karachi Inter
national Airport on Oct. 12 as
the army fanned out on the
ground and took control.
The Pakistan International
Airlines flight returning Mushar
raf to Pakistan from Sri Lanka
was refused landing rights.
Musharraf said in an earlier
interview that the pilot circled
the airport awaiting instructions
as fuel was running out.
The aircraft was rerouted to
the southern city of Nawabshah.
While the aircraft was en
route, the army gained full con
trol of the country — including
the Karachi airport, and or
dered the aircraft to land.
When the aircraft landed at
Karachi Airport, Musharraf
said, there was less than 10
minutes of fuel remaining.
He accused Sharif at the time of
attempting to kill him and endan
gering the lives of the more than
200 passengers and crew on board.
