“I would think that A&M would
n’t have a problem as long as the
transcript indicated that the student
does indeed possess a high-school
diploma,” he said. “But that is a de
cision that will have to be made by
each admissions counselor at each
college on an individual basis.”
The problem originally was iden
tified at an Oct. 11 B1SD board meet
ing after the parents of two students
expressed concerns about their chil
dren’s graduation status. An exam
ination of all transcripts could not
be completed until the beginning of
the next school year because of a
lack of summer personnel.
Taylor said that in response to the
problem, BISD is instituting a new
transcript-review process that
should prevent further errors.
The BISD Transcript and Gradu
ation Plan Review Procedures for
the 1999-2000 school year include
several new regulations,including
updating transcripts at the end of
each semester and performing a
complete audit of all 12th-grade
transcripts by the end of the first six
weeks of each school year.

Representatives include an acad
emic administrator, a student-affairs
representative and other University
faculty and student representatives.
The review process consists a
two- to three-day visit by the review
team, including tours of the depart
ment, meetings with faculty from
each department and a summary in
terview with an A&M academic ad
ministrator. The team keeps in
touch with the department with up
dates until the next review.
The whole process takes a year
of preparation by the department
under review. Each member of the
department contributes to an all-in
clusive summary booklet of the de
partment. Osters said this gives each
member of the department an op
portunity to be involved.
“The booklet is an extensive
study of the department for the re
view team to familiarize themselves
with the goals and workings of that
specific department,” she said.
“Every staff member in the depart
ment must add to the booklet, be
cause someone in one area cannot
say what another is doing. It is a
wonderful opportunity for the whole
department to come together. ”
Osters said the program provides
departments an opportunity to im
prove and gain more knowledge of
their specific field.
“The program provides depart
ments and staff a valuable under
standing of who they are, what they
do, how well they function, what
they want for the future,” she said.
Zamora said the review is a great
program because of the involve
ment of each department.
“This is going to be a successful
program,” she said. “A lot of the
team’s suggestions are already be
ing implemented by Student Life.
The offices are really interested in
improving and focus[ing] on what
they can do better. ”
The Office of Recreational Sports
will to be reviewed Nov. 14.
