Madden fell in the semifinals of
the ITA All-American Tennis
Championships yesterday at the
Penick-Allison Tennis Center on
the University of Texas campus.
Madden, who is ranked No. 12
nationally, was the tournament’s
No. 9 seed. In two matches
Saturday, he beat fifth-seeded
Peter Handoyo of the University of
Tennessee, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, and
was ahead of Louisiana State
University's Tom Hand in the
quarterfinals, 6-4, 1-6, 3-0,
before the 21st-ranked Hand
retired due to cramping.
In the semifinals, Madden fell
to Stanford University’s KJ.
Hippensteel, 7-5, 6-1. Ranked
No. 26, Hippensteel has yet to
lose a set in five victories over
players ranked in the top 40.
In doubles play. Madden and
his partner, junior Dumitru
Caradima, were the No. 1-seeded
duo in the main draw. In the quar

flagged for roughing the kicker,
which gave the Aggies 15 yards
and a first down. The penalty
seemed to spark something in the
Aggies as they seemed deter
mined to take advantage of the
situation.
The Aggies went 68 yards on
four plays and scored a touch
down, tying the game at 10.
On the ensuing kick-off, junior
strong safety Michael Jameson
hammered Kansas return man
Mitch Bowles and caused a fum
ble. Senior cornerback Jason
Webster recovered the ball at the
Kansas 37 yard line and gave
Aggies one more scoring opportu
nity before the half.
Four plays later, McCown
scrambled 15 yards down the left
side of the field for the go-ahead
touchdown, giving the Aggies a
17-10 halftime lead.
On A&M’s first possession of
the second half, McCown threw a
78-yard touchdown pass to
Taylor. The pass capped off an
A&M scoring sequence in which
the Aggies scored 21 points in
less than two minutes.
Kansas responded later in the
game by intercepting a Chris
Taylor reverse pass and returned
the ball to the A&M 33 yard line.
Four plays later, Kansas quar
terback Kylen Smith avoided
tacklers as he threw a 26-yard
touchdown pass to tight end Sean
McDermott and cut the lead to
24-17.
Kitchens tacked an a 35-yard
