American Beauty
CD courtesy of
DreamWorks Records
Much like the movie, the Amer
ican Beauty soundtrack leaves lis
teners with a mixture of emotions.
With a diverse collection of old
and new, the CD does not stick to
a single musical genre but instead
ranges from a poppy Folk Implo
sion tune to a bluesy Bill Withers
single to cuts from classic rockers
such as The Who and Free.
Among the best tracks are
“Free To Go” by The Folk Implo
sion, a somewhat cynical take on
being a teenager, in which the
standout artist leans more to gui
tar than synthesizer.
The American Beauty sound
track is put together well and
makes the jumps between genres
quickly, leaving listeners a bit dis
oriented. As a soundtrack, howev-

The group that brought radio

song “Missing,” chose to capitalize
on the song’s dance-remix success
of the song and create Tempera

Even though the album is short,
10 tracks at 56 minutes, this group
manages to miss the idea of being
eclectic. Most of the tracks are

moderate to fast-paced club tunes,
showcasing lead singer Tracy
Thorn’s Sade-like voice. She is no
Sade — she has a style of her own.
The first few songs have poten
tial and actually make the listener
want to dance. But when it comes
to dance tracks, no one really pays
attention to the lyrics, which is un
fortunate because the majority of
the songs contain decent lyrics.
TYacks like “Five Fathoms” and
"Temperamental” deal with the fa
miliar mystery of how to love, be
loved and love more.
The Casio gives the songs a dif
ferent vibe and doesn’t display
consistency. EBTG are on the verge
of techno, but there is still an ele
ment in Thorn’s voice that slows
the music down.
This album belongs in a DJ’s
hands at a local club, but it would
also make a good party album.
