LOS ANGELES (AP) — Wilt Chamberlain, the mighty 7-foot- 1 center who dominated basket ball — once scoring 100 points in a single game — and later stirred controversy with boasts of his sexual exploits, was found dead yesterday. He was 63. He was discovered by res cuers called to his home in Bel- Air shortly after noon, and a Fire Department spokesman said Chamberlain might have suffered a heart attack. Chamberlain was hospitalized with an irregular heart beat in 1992. Known as “Wilt the Stilt” and “The Big Dipper,” Chamberlain towered over the National Basketball Association from 1959 through 1973, when he played for the Philadelphia (later San Francisco) Warriors, the Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Lakers. He scored 31,419 points during his career, a record until Kareem Abdul-Jabbar broke it in 1984. Chamberlain, who never fouled out in his 1,205 regular-season and playoff games, still holds the record for career rebounds with 23,924. “Wilt was one of the greatest ever, and we will never see another one like him,” Abdul- Jabbar said. Chamberlain, who began his professional career with the Harlem Globetrotters in 1958, was one of only two men to win the MVP and rookie of the year awards in the same season (1959). He was also MVP from 1966 through 1968. He led the NBA in scoring seven straight sea sons, 1960-66, and led the league in rebounding 11 of his 14 seasons. One of his most famous records is the 100 points he scored in a single game in the Philadelphia Warriors’ 169-147 defeat of the New York Knicks on Mafch 2, 1962, in Hershey, Pa. The record has not even been threatened. In the 1961-62 season with Philadelphia, he averaged a record 50.4 points a game, and averaged 30.1 for his career. He also was one of the most versatile big men ever, leading the league in assists with 702 in 1967-68. Chamberlain led his team into the playoffs 13 times, winning two world championships. The first came in 1966-67 with the 76ers, the second in 1971-72 with the Lakers. His teams lost in the four other times and were bj en in the conference imal] times. Bill Russell and the Bt Celtics almost alwaysseens be the nemesis of Chambe: led teams, beating them in the championship serie; five times in the confe finals. Three times, a senes decided by a seventh gamf Boston won by either oi two points. A lifelong bad) Chamberlain made news his basketball career bye ing in an autobiographyi had made love to 21 women. “The women who 1 i been the most attracted tc most iriji love with, I’ve pc away I the strong Chamberlain said in a interview with the Assoc: Press. “There are about women I can think of let have married. I cared for lb lot, but not enough to mai commitment.” Extremely agile for his Chamberlain was on theci country team in high sclic® Philadelphia and was an standing high jumper and; putter at the Universib' Kansas. He had remained active; his NBA career ended - when he was in his 50s, run would circulate that teams asked him to return as a bad He also was considered an standing volleyball player, 0 the Honolulu marathon rece: and competed in a 50-mile raC Canada. In January Chamberlain made his firsto cial visit to his alma mater si' his abbreviated college can ended in 1958. In 1957, he led the Jayha"' to the NCAA tournament fini where Kansas lost to unbea: North Carolina in triple oV' time. After his jersey was raised the rafters of Allen Fieldhoif 1 Chamberlain told the cro" ; “Forty years ago I lost a hei; breaking battle, losing to Carolina by one point in overtime. It was a devastate thing for me because 1 fe let the university down, I let^ down.” The crowd interrupted, yell “No, no,” before resuming am er standing ovation. His h hand brushed his cheek as paused again, drowned out more applause.
